This news is more close to my heart than most of you, but I think the world should now focus on what's happening in Hong Kong. There has been HUGE protests that call them pro-democracy protests against what Beijing recently decided.

Quick background: Hong Kong is an independent city. Since Great Britain returned Hong Kong back to China, Hong Kong and China has a "one country, two system", which is why Hong Kong can have a democratic government. There have been signs that China slowly takes away those freedoms. Recently, Beijing went back on their word on the elections of Hong Kong Chief Executive. Instead of letting anyone to be a candidate, China wants to prescreen candidates and select whom they want as candidates. Now, the current Chief Executive claims that they haven't even discussed these things in detail and it is not the case yet, but emotions and distrust towards the Chinese government cause many university students (and now citizens) to conduct protests around the central district for an "Occupy Central".

This is an example of how big these protests are.

As I am speaking now, there is a live feed on YouTube showing a live feed as to what's happening right now, and just now, there is another wave of tear gas and even the use of rubber bullets to calm down the protest. I fear that if this escalates, it would become the second Tiananmen Square Massacre, only in Hong Kong.

Sadly, this stuff happens, and even worse people could die. I do hope that God will help this to deescalate this problem, as the alternative is not good. I do have high hopes, and thank you for sharing this, as I may not have seen this otherwise.

play4fun : I am doing modern studies at school and we are doing China so I have tried to hear about this occupy central. It is on the BBC News now. It has been going on for a while now. The vote itself is meant to be in 2017. The candidate has to be approved by kore than half of a special nominated body. The BBC said this was supposed to be the first time HK's chief executive was to be chosen directly by voters. Not sure if that is true but from what I have heard so far that won't be the case.

In a poll most people thought HongKong would be better under British than Chinese rule. Only because china is such a restrictive government.
Ruled by Britain, while colonial, they had a good quality of life and a high degree of autonomy and freedom, they were more or less left to their own devices.
China is notoriously opposed to anything different though. Any deviation from the party policy is, in their eyes, a revolt waiting to happen.
They had a legal requirement to wait 50 years for full annexation(which surprisingly, they are technically still doing), but they dont need to wait 50 years to start the ball rolling. They are laying own the groundwork for their eventual aim of one single national policy.
Frankly I would be surprised if china's government is still in power by that time though. As the country's elite get richer, the poorer will become more demanding.
Its not just the central government that annoys Hongkong though. Despite the region having a ban on immigrants from the mainland, they have been steadily growing in numbers in Hongkong. The natives have a legacy of British customs, queuing, good manners, not eating on public transport etc. The mainland Chinese however, tend not to observe any of these things, much to the annoyance of hong kong.
Even most of the 'loyalists', who supporrt china, are immigrants from the main land.

Do you know jackie chan is from hong kong?I used to love the guy. Then I looked into him. He flat out said china should stop hong kong from protesting anything, that people should not have too many rights etc.
As well as that the usa is the most corrupt nation in the entire world.

There really isnt any good reason for hong kong to be part of china.
Same for Maccau. That city was Portugal's equivalent.

China has been increasingly assertive in recent years about territory. They have also been clamping down on tibet seperatist, uighur seperatists (who are muslim), claiming huge chunks of ocean all the way down to the coasts of indonesia, vietnam, korea, japan etc, and taiwan (which they consider to be part of china too.

You should watch this video, its pretty good at providing an accurate insight.

I found a nice video too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8f9l-JtVUw

"China Uncensored" on "Youtube".

This one covers a little more on the subject with some history bits, and a few names to look up.

I have little to say on the matter other than I hope the situation gets resolved and for things to turn out for the best for all involved.

Good Luck To All.
Peace.
