It's time to decide and choose your side. Are you a trekie (star trek fan) or are you a warhead (star wars fan). The Falcon or the Enterprise. Sabers or phasers. Ewoks or Tribles. A unending war or a brave new adventure. Make your choice and defend it. |

I never saw the appeal of star trek.
Poor actors (scotty anyone?), Poor plots (lets go back in time to save the whales, or aliens will destroy us. We will just build a time machine on the spot. Poor games(every release I have seen uas been awful). Star wars has great movies, great games, an interesting extended universe yada yada. Star trek seems like it should be good but missed the mark. thenumberone : Complete agreed. Star Trek is an old person's show they brought back to make some money. Star Wars has the fun, the music, the story lines, the characters, the technology, the light sabers, the Legos, the video games, etc, etc and so on and so forth. Nothing is very compelling about Star Trek except they mucked around the universe so Kirk could hook up with green, orange, and black women. There is no strong start, middle, and finish. And the show ran in the 70s. The newer Star Treks were based on nerdism, not on a universal story everyone could enjoy. Star Wars is based on the hero's quest and everyone of all cultures can enjoy the success of a person who started with nothing and became critical to the universe. That's fun. I grew up with both and am a fan of both, however when Star Wars was released in 77 I damn near lost my mind as nothing before that had the impact like it did. I do prefer Star Wars though and I am a Stormtrooper in the 501st Legion too. |

I'm going to go the other way on this. thenumberone : Don't mess with James Doohan - AKA Scotty! warmaker : Who you calling old? Cyber Bishop : Treasonous, LOL! Not counting the books, of which I'm not sure which franchise has more, Star Wars has 6 filmed story's to choose from. I suppose you could count animated series but I'm not. Again, not counting the books, Star Trek has 714 filmed stories to watch. Also, not counting the animated series. I like them both but I think we can all agree that there are at least one or two Star Wars movies that suck but overall they're good. However, following that same 1:6 ratio, Star Trek is allowed to have at least 119 out of 714 stories that suck. Has anyone here seen close to if not all 714 of these stories... *thephantombrain raises hand*. Yes, 119 or maybe even 238 are not-so-good. The others have entertaining, fun, and sometimes humorous story lines. Why no good games or toys, no George Lucas. If Gene Roddenberry were still kickin', you'd have seen them. Also, no magic and less emphasis on fantasy. Some body's got a problem with whales? What, Star Wars doesn't have aliens that want to destroy? And nobody ever "built a time machine on the spot"! C'mon dude! With regards to fantasy versus science-fiction, let's all keep in mind that Star Trek (Roddenberry) predicted cell phones, blue tooth headsets, flat screen televisions, Jet injectors(hypo spray), skyping, personal tablets, touchsceens, fax machines and probably more that I can't think of at the moment. Star Wars = what technology? Nothings compelling? How about the never-ending search for universal peace? What about exploration from our point of view, not from a galaxy far, far away. I think that Columbus or Magellan are proof enough of men being compelled to explore. Also, Star Wars has it's share of green and purple chicks and you know that's what Han and Lando are really about. Look guys, my real point in all of this is that you sell Star Trek short. You make some good points about Star Wars but completely step on the one that paved the way for it and is just as fun. (Well, not you Cyber Bishop - you're a "fan of both", as am I) I will be willing to concede to a tie. Call me a wartrekie or a nerd, whichever you prefer but I'll answer to either with no shame. thenumberone : Don't mess with James Doohan - AKA Scotty! warmaker : Who you calling old? For this, I am going to have to go with Star wars. I have only seen half of the movies and watches the show, as well as played a few of the games, but I have never watched any star trek movie, show, or anything. |

My answer won't be as detailed as thephantombrain's because I don't know enough about either series. Lol. But I do find it interesting how people change. When I was young.... my dad adored star trek but I found it downright boring. I liked star wars immensely though. Now... I enjoy both, but my preferences have changed. I'm pretty sure I'd like star trek better if I ever got the chance to go through the shows. There are more possibilities, for sure. I really, really enjoyed stargate, so I think the parallels might be close enough. I'd love seeing new species of aliens and learning about their traditions and cultures. Even though it's fiction, I like that type of thing. Now... I enjoy both, but my preferences have changed. I'm pretty sure I'd like star trek better if I ever got the chance to go through the shows. That's a tough decision. I grew up liking Star Wars a bit, but grew out of it. Then when I got older I got into Star Trek, mainly just Voyager and DS9. I never did like any of the old movies or show. But honestly, Star Wars: The Clone Wars got me back into Star Wars. I never really enjoyed the newer Star Wars films, but for some reason, I really enjoyed The Clone Wars and Ahsoka. I don't mind the original trilogy, but I'm by no means a big fan of those movies. Now I'm watching Star Wars Rebels, which isn't too bad. I guess if I had to choose, I'd go with...Star Wars. I still love Star Trek Voyager ( Captain Janeway and B'elanna keep me watching) and watch it whenever I see it's on, but I think Star Wars just edges it out. To be honest, i can't get too deep into either of those series. However, i will have to go with Star Wars. I could actually sit through at least one of the films and not worry about any overly-complicated storyline that no human alive could study fully. |

Star Trek. There is really no comparison for me. I have grown up on it and really love Star Trek The Next Generation. It is probably one of the best TV series of all time in my opinion. I think the Borg and Q really made that series special and all of the other series are pretty good as well. Star Trek First Contact is still my favorite movie. I have watched many of the Star Wars movies, but really didn't find them as good. Darth Vader was a pretty impressive villain and the plot twist with him and Luke Skywalker was good, but still not nearly as good as Star Trek. Star Trek. There is really no comparison for me. I am a Star Wars fan. I went to see the original trilogy, i had the darth vader toy that the head pops off easy, yadda yadda. I can appreciate the more cerebral quality of Star Trek, which often tackles modern issues under intergalactic veneer. But just from entertainment purposes, I totally loves the Star Wars world. Its been an insanely long time since anyone has posted here but I LOVE this subject matter. I've been a passionate fan of both since I was a toddler. When I was younger Star Wars but as I've gotten older I've gotten more into Star Trek with its more mature concepts. Its really hard for me to pick. I guess it depends partly on eras. I prefer the Original series of Star Trek to the prequel trilogy of Star Wars. That being said I would give the Original trilogy of Star Wars an edge over the Next generation that gets bigger as the show went on because I wasn't all that fond of the later seasons of the Next Generation. Although earlier on it was close. In terms of the earlier eras it isn't all that close. I will take the Knights of the old Republic and old republic era over the Enterprise era without much hesitation. Also conceptually I just like the greater originality of the storylines of Star Trek over Star Wars. Particularly as the villains are concerned. I'm not knocking Darth Vader or Darth Sidious because they were just awesome and better than anything star trek puts out. But it feels like Star Wars just rehashes these villains over and over again with different villains now and again but not a lot of differences. In the end Star Wars just keeps using the sith which like I said are still awesome but it still is more the same. In Star Trek you have V'ger and the borg, as well as the unforgettable Khan and his augments, and just a lot of different guys. The only downside to something so episodic being that there isn't as much emotional impact in Star Trek as there is in Star Wars. In terms of video games and just general badassery which is what most people now a days care about, its no competition in favor of Star wars. Darth Vader, Star destroyers, the death star, and lightsabers to name a few are absolutely revolutionary. Overall this is just incredibly difficult to pick one and I guess it just depends on what I'm more invested in at a time. I might give some edge to Star Wars overall but I don't know. |

For me, the choice splits between defining the two. Star Wars is basically Science Fantasy. Nothing about it is realistic, it's purely entertainment. It has no social commentary, no effort for diversity except too little too late, and the prequels are horrendous. They're created solely to sell toys and be garbage. Star Trek is Science Fiction, but based on reality. Phasers? We got 'em. Replicators? On the way. Transporters? Ehhh, not yet but we're working on it. Warp drive? Currently that technology seems impossible but scientists might have a breakthrough eventually. Furthermore, star trek has reams of episodes with lots of social commentary. The Best of Both Worlds is also widely considered not just the greatest Star Trek episode of all time, but one of the greatest moments in TV entertainment, social commentary... and just everything, period. The Next Generation is my own favorite series, followed by Voyager (Which has as many s***ty episodes as good ones) and the original series (Which is just dated, that's its main issue). Every star trek series has at least some good in it, but not every Star Wars movie is even remotely alike. Check out some reviews if you're a Star Wars lover. You might realize just how truly terrible the prequels are. http://redlettermedia.com/plinkett/star-wars/ Star Wars is basically Science Fantasy. I... really am not sure about which series in particular do I prefer. While both are science fiction series, they both seem to shoot for different styles entirely. At least in the movies, the Star Wars original trilogy seemed more adventurous than the recent Star Trek films in my opinion. |

I like Star Wars a lot more because I have never watched Star Trek so it is quite obvious my favorite of the two movies is Star Wars. I do not know why I never watched Star Trek. I think because I thought it was for nerds back long ago. |

I've personally never been a fan of Star Trek so I'd definitely have to pick Star Wars. Everything from the movies to the video games are spectacular. The world would never be the same without lightsaber duels and the jedi having to bring down the sith. Whether you're playing Star Wars Battlefront or you're watching Star Wars Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back, you're sure to be thoroughly entertained even if you've seen the movies like a million times like I have lol! |
