Should first time drug offenders have the option of rehab?

Should first time drug offenders have the option of rehab? When a cop arrests a drug user for, well... taking drugs, if they haven't been sentenced to rehab yet or it was their first offense.

Personally my opinion on the subject is yes, if this is their first drug offense it should be required that the court offer them a rehab program in a comfortable environment as opposed to detoxing in poorly made prison programs, they can turn this down of course, but repeated drug offenders should not have this choice (although prohibition is a stupid idea in it's own, but lets save that for another time) as then they would just be abusing the system, but detoxing in a comfortable environment should be an option for first offenders. What do you think?

thenumberone : There is rehab in prison, but I personally think cocaine and Krokodil abusers would much rather get help in a comfortable facility than in the same area as murderers and rapists. And if you think taking drugs is as bad as killing someone, than you have issues.

It depends on what it is. I think dealers should skip rehab and serve in prison because they distribute the drugs that gets people hooked. First time offenders that are not dealers should be sent to rehab first. A lot of times their drug use is to cope with a problem such as trauma, stress and coping. However, what happens is the drug use become a bigger problem.  That is why I believe the first offense they should be sent to rehab. If they do it again then I would think they need to go to jail.  Dealers as I stated should not be sent to rehab but to the pen

tornadocam : Many times dealers sell drugs to support their own habit. I agree with most of what you said except that first time offenders who are also charged with possession with the intent to distribute and test positive for that illicit substance should have the opportunity for a short stint in the County Jail and/or probation and/or to complete a drug rehabilitation program.

Honestly though, only 20% of people that go through rehab stay clean for any significant amount of time but every addict deserves at least one chance to turn things around.

Pretty much but a 20% reduction is statistically pretty good.

I think so; my answer is yes. It would never work that way though if the said offender was arrested and thus booked into jail. Jail is jail, no changing the system.

If you want my real opinion, it's that prison is a place for murderers and rapists and thieves, not your neighborhood pot dealer.

But, given that the real world doesn't seem to care much for drug users, I think rehab is a good idea.

Zurenriri : Exactly, why would you lock up a human for a victimless crime? And agree'd they don't they view them all as horrible people who live in their mom's basements and never stop smoking...

they only way an addict can get better is if they want to get better so in most cases they would be right back out in the street doing the some stuff plus i think rehab is a little more expensive then jail most drug addicts dont have insurance to pay for rehab so the court ordered rehab centers would have to be government funded and eventually be no better then the jail detox programs
