It's a soccer game, but it's like an RPG at the same time. Everything is decision based, whether you wanna pass the ball, shoot the ball, dribble, and your methods of defending. Every offensive action has a weakness to a defensive action, for example, a pass would more likely fail if the defender does a pass-cut and shot would most likely fail if the defender blocks it. Like the series, certain characters have special moves and the special moves are really effective. The game uses stamina, called guts, for each character and everything you do takes away guts. This means you can't always use special moves. Tsubasa, the main character, starts out with about 700 and his special moves usually take around 200 to 300. The enemy team also usually have players that are really good and have special moves. Getting used to the game itself isn't very hard, but some of the matches can get pretty annoying because of certain players, and by the time you get to the part where you represent Japan, there are so many special characters in the enemy team that it gets really hard. Personally I am really hooked on this game since it gives me the freedom to use the characters that I've known, for as long as I can remember, in every way I can imagine.
