Hello,

I have been playing some N64 games with Mupen64lus and using the keyboard for the controller.  There doesn't seem to be any way to go to a menu to change the controls (I tried double clicking and hitting esc) so I am using the pre-set keys.  I have been able to play a few games, like Ocarina of Time, Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie, all the way through.  There were a few awkward parts, like when I had to aim, but I was able to get through them.  There were also a few games, like Goldeneye, that I wasn't able to play because there was just too much aiming while also walking.

I am now playing Banjo-Tootie (the second N64 Banjo game) and I am having some trouble figuring out some of the controls.

The first thing I am having a problem with is switching from shooting regular blue eggs to firing fire eggs.  If I had a regular N64 controller, I would hit the "R" button (the right index finger button) to switch them.  The thing is, I know it can be done as I switched them at one point.  I was just mashing on the keyboard to see if something would do it and they did change.  But I'm not sure which buttons did it.  I tried to do it again but I can't figure out what I hit.  I think it was a combination of buttons (like you press a button while holding another one down).

The second thing I can't figure out how to do is to walk slowly.  Normally, the character runs but a few times you need to tip-toe.  This was not in the first Banjo game so it didn't come up when I played that one.  What you would do on the regular controller is press the joystick half way instead of all the way.  I don't know if it is possible to do this on a keyboard but I have a feeling it might be by pressing two buttons.

So can anyone help me with this?  Does anyone know what I would press for the "R" button and to move forward slowly?

Let me know if you need me to elaborate on my questions.

Thanks in advance for any help with this; I really appreciate it!

There is no way to configure mupen64plus on vizzed. Also Playing n64 games with a keyboard is Not cool. Getting a PC controller is you're best bet. If you have a Controller with a usb port that should do. And then just play with the 1964 emulator and configure the controls.

Is there a controller that I could use for the Mupen64 emulator? I have had problems getting 1964 to run on my computer.

What is the best controller to buy that will work on the most emulators? And I have no experience with controllers so I need to be told the brand and model name.

Also, I looked into it some more and it looks like I can't tip-toe with the keyboard. But that isn't terrible as it only prevents me from collecting a few items that aren't necessary to keep playing.

However, I do need to switch to fire eggs. And I know that is possible because something I hit did switch them at one point.

Does any one know what the key is for the "R" button.

Thanks again!

EDIT: I just figured out how to press what would be the "R" button to switch from blue eggs to red eggs. With the keyboard, while holding the "i" key down, you press "c".

jimbrown257 : I suppose that all USB controllers will work with nearly all emulators, but if not then I can recommend the one I use. It works great with all emulators, and it has good default controls for Mupen. I believe it is called the Logitech Dual Action. It also has a nifty button that switches the analog controls with the d-pad, so if you don't like to use the analog stick then you can use the D-pad instead.

OR, a cheaper solution: You could play Banjo-Tooie off of Vizzed by transferring your save file to the non-Vizzed Mupen64Plus. The USB controller has much better controls, but it costs money. The keyboard has bad controls but you don't need to buy anything separate. Your choice.

Here are the mupen controls by the way. https://code.google.com/p/mupen64plus/wiki/KeyboardSetup
