There are a TON of spoilers in this review. If you did not see the movie, but plan on seeing it, don't read this. If you want to read this to see what it's like to change your opinion, read it but be prepared to be amazed, and if you have seen the movie, go and see it again.

To me, there are 3 different types of movies when it comes to theaters. There are the Blockbuster movies, there are the movies that I plan to see, and there are the movies that I randomly decides to watch for no reason little to no reason at all. It is this third category of movie that I like the best. As a matter of fact, as many as half of my top 10 favorite movies might fall under this category. Unlike Blockbusters and movies that you plan on seeing, these kinds of movies are unexpected and may either bore you or startle you with unexpected twists and turns. Recently, I began to rate these movies based on what I like to call the Prisoners Effect. This is based on the movie Prisoners, one of the first movies that I ever decided to just randomly watch. The movie was at least 10 times better than I had thought it would be and of the 18 different movies I saw in 2013, it was my favorite.

Now, whenever I decide to see some random movie at the last minute, I rate it based on how much better it is than I had anticipated and I compare the gap between expectations and reality to Prisoners. Since then, all random movies have fell short, and then when I went to see Need For Speed, I figured that was as close as I could get. That was until I saw this movie, it was much better than I had expected it to be, actually, I didn't expect anything at all from this movie. I saw Prisoners because I saw the trailer over and over again for about 2 months and it was still a last second decision to see it. When it comes to Transcendence, I knew next to nothing about the movie. All I knew was the title until I saw the trailer just a few days before it was released and I thought it was terrible. Yet i did not want to see Haunted House 2 or Oculus, so i was left with this movie.

I am glad that I ended up seeing this one instead of the others. This is a one of a kind film that no other could compete with. It has a moving story with enough twists and very dramatic moments to last a lifetime. Without a doubt, this was the greatest Sci fi movie that I have ever seen and I doubt that I will see a better one any time soon, and if I have the chance, I would gladly watch this movie in theaters again. The movie was so good in my opinion, that I am going to have to rewrite my list of favorite movies because this ones makes me think of all the other films that I have seen in a different way.

ACTING 10/10

Along with the story, the acting is part of what makes the movie so awesome. The acting is spectacular, this is actually the first ever Johnny Depp movie that I have ever seen and I believe that he did a great job in his role. If I were to go and watch every one of his movies, I would probably say that his role in this one would be his best. Depp plays as Dr. Will Caster, a Scientist who is trying to use AI to save the world. He does an amazing job with all of his roles in the film. Every one of his facial expressions fills you with a series of sadness, despair, drama, and suspense all at the same time.

Morgan Freeman plays a government agent and played this role extraordinarily well, and all of the other stars that make up the film put on a great show. Even the citizens who are being controlled by Will have a huge effect on the movie.

STORY 10/10 +

The story is simple, yet very confusing. It is about a man who is basically trying to build a supercomputer. He aims to build something that can self evolve and that could basically save the planet. During this process, he gets himself killed by a group of terrorists, but together with his wife and a friend, they manage to upload his mind to the computer that they were working on. Then, everything goes south and the essential plot goes crazy. First of all, there is no real villain in this film, there's just 5 sets of people who are all in a way conflicted with each other. The first 3 sets are all individuals and are Will, his wife Evelyn, and the friend Max. The other two groups are the terrorists and the government. While you watch the movie, it all seems fine, but once you dig deep into the character relationships, you get a bit puzzled.

Here is a quick guide to the relationships. The terrorists attacked a government building and kill Will. This is done though, to prevent his Supercomputer to release, which they fear will hurt the planet. During his last few days alive, Will, along with Evelyn and Max upload his mind to the computer. Friend realizes that if the computer is hooked to the internet, the entire world would belong to him, so he attempts to shut down the computer. Evelyn then rejects Msx, kicks him up and connects Will to the internet. The terrorists kidnap Max, attempt to attack Evelyn and then Max joins the group willingly. The government then teams up with the terrorists. Evelyn eventually realizes what Will is doing and leaves him. Now, its all four remaining groups who are all now one team against Will, who just wants to save the planet. Then it gets even more out of control, wife rejoins Will and the terrorists threaten to kill Max if Evelyn does not kill Will (who is now a human again). Its very confusing, but if it had not been like this, the movie would have been less interesting because a ton of drama comes out of these relationships.

There are three scenes that are worth talking about that have made the movie so awesome. The first one is the scene where Wills mind is finally uploaded to the computer. This has to be the most that I have cried at any movie ever, it was just such a happy scene. Will has just died, so Evelyn and Max are trying to see if the computer with his mind works. After numerous failed attempts, they decided it did not work and they shut down the computer. They remembered that first they would have to wipe all of the data from it, and when they turn it back on, there is a message on the screen from Will. This scene and the next couple after that were beautiful. The next scene I like happens about half way through the film. The terrorists, government, and friend all arrive at the data center and attempt to bring wife away from there. At this point there is a standoff between the armed terrorists and the super powered robotic humans that are all being controlled by Will. This scene is amazing, one of the robotic humans gets shot, but then particles being rising from the ground and within seconds, it is cured. The scene ends with the terrorists shooting down all the robots and either running or driving away. However, all of the robots revive and two of them follow. This scene is great because you have the car trying to drive away, and one of the robots right behind them running faster than the car. This scene was great.

Then you have the greatest scene of all, the  last cluster of scenes. At this point, Evelyn had rebelled against Will and agreed to go back and be uploaded into the computer as well. However, she has a virus put into her system which would shut down the computer, (and all internet around the world.) The groups set up weapons all over the town and aim them at the data center in case things go wrong and Evelyn walks towards the entrance to the center. Things go smoothly until somebody walks out of the center, Will, in his human body. They talk for a few minutes and then the terrorists begin firing at the center. The solar panels start exploding all around Will and Evelyn and eventually Evelyn gets knocked down. This scene makes you think that it really was a computer and not Will because for a few seconds while the explosions are going on, Will just stands there staring at Evelyn as if he had no idea what to do. He does end up taking her down to the center but then things go wrong. It turns out that every citizen of the town was now controlled by Will and they all start surrounding the government and terrorist members. This is the point where the leader of the terrorist group threatened to kill Max. But then, one of the citizens walked up to them, and in Wills voice, said that Max did not have to die for what he had caused. As a result, Will uploads the virus which kills both him and Evelyn, shuts down the worlds internet, and saves the world from what he would have caused.

These three scenes alone would be enough to make an amazing movie, and just watching those three could leave you in tears. I love a movie that has a good story and acting. Sure, action and explosions are cool to, but for me, I don't like a movie unless it has a solid plot and this movie has that and much more. The story is one of a kind, its golden, and its the kind of story that makes me go "I want to see that movie again and again." I am going to give the story a grade that it deserves and it would not be fair at all to give it anything less than a perfect 10 out of 10, but if I could give it a higher grade, I would because its just that good. The story, the dialogue, the character development and relationships all work together in harmony to make sure that this is the best movie that you have ever seen.

GRAPHICS 9/10

As for the graphics, there aren't a lot of them, but the ones that are used may surprise you. Towards the end of the movie, there are the explosions that pit a ton of drama around the scene. There are the particles that rise from the ground to repair the citizens, and pretty much everything looks unique. I saw the movie in regular view, but I am in awe of what it could be if you watch it in IMAX. My overall grade for Effects will be a 9 out of 10.

MUSIC 9/10

As for the music, there isn't much. Its not that there is bad music, or no music at all, but everything else about the movie was so captivating that I barely paid attention to the music. There are a few tracks that go well with the drama and with some of the fast paced scenes towards the end. My grade foe music will be another 9 out of 10.

OVERALL 9.8

Overall, I doubt I will see another movie this year that will be better and I am almost positive that once I go over my list, this will be one of the 3 best movies I have ever seen. I don't know why the movie was only given 3 stars and why some sites say the movie was bad, to me, it was near perfect. It was so awesome, that I saw it yesterday, I already agreed to see it with mt friend tomorrow, and I plan on watching it again in IMAX sometime. My overall grade foe this movie is going to be 9.8
