I'm not sure why, but today, I was in a bit of a darker mood. Maybe it's because I've been reading The Everlost Trilogy lately, and that's pretty dark when it comes to novels (it's about dead children, so go figure). In any case, my mood turned into this poem, and I'm sharing it because... well, I just am. Please enjoy and let me know what you think!

Tristesse

One, two, and three-
Just numbers to me.
But maybe, now to you,
They mean something new.

Lay yourself down.
Let your troubles drown.
Close your eyes, sleep, say goodbye.
No, don’t you dare cry.

Keep yourself calm
As you sink to the center of the Earth.
Who knows? Perhaps there’s mirth.
You’ll see soon- it won’t take long.

They say it takes strong will
To keep your soul from getting killed.
Were you just not strong enough
Or did you just give up?

You can’t lean on a shoulder like mine
Because now, it’s time to say goodbye.
Dry your tears and
Put on fake cheer.

Step on through the gate, and
Tell me what’s beyond.
Return with bars of angel-song.
At this point, going back- it’s too late.

Don’t do this to me.
It’s not my fault you have to leave.
Please, put on a smile
As you tread the ethereal miles.

My voice catches in my throat,
Though I’ve learned this speech by rote.
It’s so difficult to get my meaning across,
To tell you I’m so sorry you’re now lost.

I’m sorry too,
But please don’t transfer blame.
Everything I’d try would end up the same.
There’s nothing I can do to help you.

Of what are you afraid?
It’s just a light at the end.
Towards the Afterlife you’ll be sent,
So in this broken world you need not remain.
What a blessing- you will be remade.

Goodbye, fella.
Can’t say I’m not jealous.

Now I’m all alone,
The seeds of remorse sown.
Goodbye, my dear, goodbye.
I leave you where you lie.
Goodbye, my love, goodbye,
As your last breath you sigh.

Dragonlord Stephi : Hm. I really like this one as well, you are still really good at stories and poems. You should keep up the good work, and the ryhming.

zanderlex : Thank you! The rhyme schemes are actually one of the hardest parts of writing the poems. I often have to write out the pattern in the margins and create lists of rhymes for the 'tag' at the end of each line. I'm glad to hear it's paid off.

Dragonlord Stephi : Well all of it pays off because those schemes are what really gives it life, in my opinion. Without it, it would still have meaning, but would appeal less.

You did well, it almost sounds like a half- regretful mother laying her child into the cradle on last time. The poem almost hints at something evil too me, but it could also hint at something good, that being the afterlife that God has in store for young children who are not so fortunate.
And yet I don't see that mother as all that much a good guy, but I might be subtly mistaken.

Sword legion : Thank you! I wasn't sure what personality to give the "mother" or even if it's a mother at all, but I did not notice the subtle "evil." Rereading it, though, I did. Thanks for pointing it out (I so love it when people point out things I didn't notice!) and I'm glad you liked it!
