People can agree that the Nintendo Entertainment System is a retro console. Eventually the Nintendo 64 became a retro console as well. But here's my question: What about the Gamecube? What about the Play Station 2 and Xbox? How much longer will it be until we call the likes of Halo 2 and Super Smash Bros. Melee "retro games"?

At first it seems weird to call games made in the 21st century retro. But what will we say in 5 years? 10 years? What will people think of these consoles in 50 years?

Ultimately, when do you think the more recent consoles will become retro?

Retro has to do mainly with the age of what you are talking about. I hear people calling Ps2 and Xbox retro right now. I don't think they are retro yet at all but in about ten years they will be. In some time people will be looking about and saying "you remember the Play Station 2? Remember when games looked like that?" Retro and classics are two completely different things though.

The new consoles will be retro one day like everything else. I don't think they will be seen in the same light as stuff like the Atari 2600, Sega Genesis, or Nes though.

Personally I think of systems as retro when the games for that system are no longer sold in any store.

Thebiguglyalien : This is actually a pretty good question. But i dont think the PS2 and Gamecube and xbox's are retro. I hardly think the PS1 is retro lol. For me retro are the 8 bit and 16 bit consoles. Maybe the 32 and 64 bits too

How I view it, why people calls consoles "Retro Consoles" is mostly to my point of view.

Like with the PS2, Xbox, and GameCube, they ain't retro just yet, even know we don't see any Xbox and GameCube games and rarely see PS2 games anymore (mostly be in those cheep US$2.99 bin), that doesn't really mean they're retro yet, in fact, both the N64 just became retro like a couple years ago, the N64 was created in 1996 and discontinued in 2002, and also, the PS1 is debating if it's in fact a retro system or not.

To, for it to be retro, the console has to be fully discontented for awhile (like 10 years).

I am going to agree with Igor that 10 years is a good time frame for a game to become a retro game once it is discontinued. Anything that has been discontinued, but has not been off the shelves for that long wouldn't be considered.

In an absolute time frame, I think that the "newest" retro consoles are the PS1, N64, e.t.c. I agree that 10 years is a pretty good time frame, so the Gen 6-ers will probably be seen as "retro" later this year.
