The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty was the last movie that I had gone to see in 2013 and I feel that it was a great way to end the year. My friend kept telling me that he really wanted to see it, so we made plans to see it the day it came out on Christmas. As the release date drew closer, I kept getting more interested in the movie and when the movie came out, I was shocked to see that it was even better than I had thought it would be.
The movie stars Ben Stiller as Walter Mitty, a middle aged worker for Life Magazine who zones out a lot. Mitty essentially leads a pretty normal life until he decides to embark on the adventure of a lifetime to retrieve a picture that he believes was lost. The movie also stars Kristen Wiig and Sean Penn. I believe that Stiller had done a great job with the role, he brought the standard Ben Stiller comedy into the movie, but has also put on a show that really talks about living your life and I see the movie being about always trying to accomplish your goals, even if you think they are out of your reach. In my opinion, Stiller knew how to make this more believable.
There are a ton of special effects. In addition to the story, the graphics are really what made the movie so unique. The way the movie works, is that they make it so a standard New York worker can do all sorts of various adventurous actions such as jumping out of helicopters into shark infested waters, climbing monstrous mountains, and erupting volcanoes. Those all really happened and were not daydreams, the daydreams used even more special effects to make the scenes appear more dramatic.
As for the music, there is going to be a special place in my heart for the soundtrack. Ever since the trailers were first released, I had begun to listen to pieces from the soundtrack and I really liked them. Some of the songs have little to no relation to the story or action and are in a way, used during "filler" scenes so they don't play a crucial role, but the songs themselves are memorable. Such songs include Dirty Paws by Of Monsters And Men, an Icelandic Indie Pop band, and Step Up by Jose Gonzalez.
Overall, this movie was much better than I had thought it would be, it was captivating and was epic. It was the 2nd best movie that I had seen in 2013 and my grade for it will be 9.4 out of 10.
