When Prisoners had first been released last year, I was not thrilled about seeing it because I thought I would not like it. That changed after seeing the trailer over and over in theaters, until the point where I finally decided to watch it, and I was not disappointed.
For starter, the casting of the film was remarkable. Hugh Jackman played a father who is unstable in a way and does everything in his power, and beyond, to find his daughter when she and her friend both go missing. Jake Gyllenhaal plays the detective who does everything he can to solve the case on his. The two actors work together splendidly and there is never a dull moment when either one of them is on the screen. Every gesture, action, and statement made by either of them essentially catapults the story and makes it more thrilling. I am personally surprised that they did not win academy awards for their work. (Gyllenhaal did win Best Supporting Actor of the Year at the Hollywood Film Festival)
The story is pretty basic, and is about two children going missing after playing on the back of an RV down the road from there house. This is where the simplicity ends because from that point on, the story branches off into a series of strange plot twists and thrills.
As for special effects and such, I don't believe any were used, except for maybe animals and for enhancing the scenery. However, that is fine because in a movie like this, there is no need for special effects as long as you have the story and dialogue.
As for music, it's not really memorable as music itself, but more of a backdrop for everything that is going on. Sure, the music is playing throughout most of the scenes very quietly, but you only really notice it when a big scene happens and all you hear is the sounds that work with the clip, not the whole song. But that's fine, because it makes each scene even more dramatic.
For an overall grade, I am going to give this movie a 9.5 and recommend it to anybody who has not seen this movie because if you are the kind of person who likes drama and thrills, this is the movie for you.
