Some people on Viz may already know this but I have Autism. I often find that those of us with Autism are often negative portrayed by the media. For example, one time the media said we were monsters waiting to snap. What is also sad is some people say we that are Autistic can't do things because of our Autism. Guess what, yes we can. I'm going to share my milestones because I want people to see that we that are Autistic can do great things.

First of all, I have high functioning Autism. Life has had its ups and downs it is not easy. I am also a Christian I got saved when I was age 11 and rededicated my life back to Christ 3 years ago. I rededicated my life back to Christ because I was ashamed of my Autism. But I still learned that Christ loved me and I was a Child of God. I wanted to share these Milestones so people will see this is what Autism can be and what us that are Autism can do. I hope this encourages anybody out there that has a family member or even a child with Autism.

Milestones
  • When I was very young some professionals said I would not make it very far in life. I proved them wrong. In 2007 I earned my Associates degree in Natural Science.
  • Three years later in 2010 I would graduate with my Bachelors in Biology
  • Last year I really did what people earlier in y life thought I was impossible I earned my Masters degree.
  • I am also a trained weather spotter and study Meteorology also

This post greatly encouraged me! Thank you so much for making this thread! I agree that those of us with Autism are capable of things that people without Autism are capable of. I have come a long way too. When I was diagnosed with Autism, I barely say anything to anyone for a while and now I can easily talk to a lot of people, even a girl and some people I don't know well!

Glad you found my stuff encouraging. I will be honest I still struggle at times socializing and I still make mistakes but I try. Some of the most influential people had Autism. Sir Isaac Newton is believed to have had Autism as well as Tomas Jefferson.

You're more functional and successful in this world than I am and I'm not autistic. Congratulations on all of your accomplishments.

People really should see this.
I too believe that no matter what you have if you strive hard enough you can do anything.  Autism is something that if a person has they don't have to be labeled by it.  Congrats on doing so well in your life and making sure you are not letting Autism label you!

tornadocam : I'm so proud of you!  I have Asperger's Syndrome, so I relate to you a lot.  I was told by professionals that I would never drive or go to college, and I proved them wrong!  In fact, I'm near graduation!  I struggle with this one literature class, though.  There is some stuff in the class that I don't want to read, since it's filled with bad language and other stuff.  I am not doing very well in the class right now, and may have to drop it.  I hope that I'll make it through college somehow and get a job.

I was also ashamed of my disability for a very long time.  But I too, gained perspective and light by rededicating my life to Christ.  I filled my life with service and good thoughts, and was blessed for it.  But I sadly fell away for a while.  I'm now changing again and repenting of my sins.  I've hurt a lot of people, and I want to make sure they are happy.  But I know that they have the freedom to choose.  My parents and brother aren't very happy right now, and I try to cheer them up.  But they don't want cheered up, it seems, or I have not been reaching out as well as I should be.  I want my family to be happy, more than anything!  I know if I give them my all, I'll be happy too.

The greatest problem with the media's portrayal of Autism Spectrum Disorders is that they want to compare us to others, instead of comparing us to us.  We may be disabled, but our very disability enables us to do things that others will likely never accomplish in their lifetime.  Their is a scripture of my church that goes as follows:

"And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them."

This is Christ speaking, and it holds true for all of us.  If we cast our burdens upon the Lord and humble ourselves, we will find that our weaknesses have become strengths unto us.  I love this scripture because it makes me feel like I can be who I need to be, not what the world wants me to be.  "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God" -Romans 3:23.  But every day I live His Word, I feel stronger.  Although I may never quite reach perfection, I believe that as a literal child of God, I can grow forever if I live the right way.  It's that hope that keeps me happy.
