After suffering from laziness, I am back and with a review that could be the best one yet. Over the course of a few months, I became this crazed Fire Emblem fan. Frankly, I am shocked most people don't even bother with the games. Once it drives you in with the challenge of not having a single character die, having you restart the chapter all over again, you get gradually sucked in and addicted. That was the point of fire emblem games, chess with rpg elements spread throughout. The first Fire Emblem: Dark Dragon & The Sword of Light, it had a wide reception in Japan, they made a sequel, Fire Emblem Gaiden, which is what I am reviewing today.
Graphics-8
The graphics of that game were that to be expected of a Fire Emblem NES game. We have our battle animations even then, were good for its time. Most animations don't even come close, not even Ryu Hayabusa's jumps could compare to some of the animations in that game. The maps of which we traversed were just fine, they looked like they did a good job. Of course some of the graphics don't make the cut. The face portraits were very bad for the most part. One of the characters have the nerve to keep sticking his tongue out at me, and Celica's portrait looks like the face of a little child, Celica is older than that.
Sound-9
The sound, even though it was 8-bit, was addicting  and you end up humming to yourself all the time. Some of this game's music was also on later titles, further proving this music was addicting. In fact, it outdid it's predecessor by a long shot in my opinion. In the original Fire Emblem, you had the same map theme until the last chapter, getting very annoying at times. Fire Emblem Gaiden's music had more variety, and I always love a game with a good soundtrack, believe it or not. Of course when I put a 9 though, there has to be something wrong, right? Some games had a bit more instrumental music than Fire Emblem's. Take Mega Man's music, it had a more complex chip that allowed for amazing music, but still, Gaiden's music is good too.
Addictiveness-10
Did I mention that this game was addicting? It doesn't seem like it at first but as soon as you start playing, you won't be able to stop. What had me mainly addicted was that fact I get joy out of killing enemy thieves, training up all my characters, and move across a board. You did not want to put away your laptop until you villagers have been promoted, or you defeat a mid boss, or even complete the game. There was also difficulty, where you wanted to feel superior to everyone else by completing this hard game. So you play for hours at night, playing through a map 15 times because one of your units died, having your stubbornness get the best of you to complete this game. And once you finally do, you want to show the world your skills by making a let's play of this game. This never ends, our need to feel superior is what drives us to play this game.
Story-6
For a Fire Emblem game, this strangely did not have much story. All that usually happens is you are greeted with some part of the story and then you bully your way though 6 to 8 maps per chapter, and then you complete it. All I see is Rigel invades Zofia and Alm and Celica must put this war to an end. It is sadly not what I hoped for when it came to stories like this. In the original fire emblem, lots of the plot develops over the beginning of the chapter. It made you wonder, and that's what strangely made me play other games from the series like this one. So sadly, I feel as though this story isn't the best.
Depth-9
This game is big for a cartridge that can hold very little data. Considering the amount of places on the world map, in has over 40 maps, and you can replay some of those maps to train up your units. There is also forts where you can recruit some certain characters which can sometimes hold a treasure. These items can be very useful and they are a necessity if you want to complete this game. That's all I can say about the depth, let's move on to what I wanted to cover at the beginning.
Difficulty-10
This is one of the hardest Fire Emblem games I have ever played, others being Genealogy of the Holy War and Radiant Dawn. This pretty much set the tone for these two future games. Every unit has terrible growth rates, and the max stat cap is 40 for each class. It is very unlikely to cap most of your stats in this game do to the fact most growths don't exceed 30%. The Beginning of the game is where you need better growth rates. It starts out with 3 maps with weak thieves, and at the start of the fourth map, it turns into the realm of the RNG goddess. The boss of this map is a mercenary, which even with 3 maps worth of training is able to double you. He also carries something that lessens the damage taken to him, and occasionally, he gets a critical hit. If he gives a critical hit to Alm, game over.
The game also tries to make this less hard by allowing you to do something you didn't know you can do, you could replay the thief shrine, or other shrines and graveyards. There was also something you should have gotten at the beginning of the game, but it ends up that you get it in chapter 3. It is called an angel ring, and when equipped, when you level up, it doubles the stat gains. Where was that when I needed it? You could also seek to power up your stats at the shrines when you talk to the left and right statues; how could you have possibly have known that. The game ends up getting so hard, you end up resorting to using nightmare modules or any hacking tool to make the game easy.
Overall-8.4
In conclusion, this game had good graphics & sound, it is very addictive, not so good story, a lot to offer, and a whooping difficulty. This game I would not recommend to those who get angered easily. I think I got my point out, so I've had enough. I shall see you when I feel like it.
