It seems they don't teach it any more here in Alabama and Mississippi... is it just us or is there other places that do teach it anymore? I just want to know why they don't have it anymore, I mean there is plenty of people in the world who know how to cook and would be willing to teach others.

I can see potential controversy from cooking classes in schools if teachers recommend more girl students than boys for it, since that would be typecasting women.

I think a cooking club would be much more apt. There only needs to be someone to start it.

It's also hard for clubs to be nationalized and it would take a major combined effort from thousands of schools.

They still teach it here in Washington. the reason could be because of money setbacks, so they had to end the program. or maybe the class just didn't appeal to students and didn't help them on their way to collage and jobs and things. It just kinda depends.

I have never taken HE at all. I know my high school taught it like 10 years before I went there, but they never told us why it was taken out. My guess would be because of budget cuts.

They still teach HE here, although when I was younger they've always thought us carpentry and electronics instead of cooking. xD always at the end of the day I had bruises and wounds specially all over my hands, and I couldn't play any instruments. The worst ever. xD

Well, perhaps, directing the course towards girls primarily was seen as controversial due to the idea being relatively sexist. This is just my guess, though.

I am guessing it has to do with this economy. Also, we are expanding our minds towards technology which means more electronics and less activity to get a skill experience. So basically cooking is old fashioned. Out with the old and in with the new.

My school has dropped it too. Because of the budget issues, they've been forced to drop lots of classes that aren't "necessary" for further education or entering the job market. Which is a shame, because I really need to take that class (I'm a bit of a klutz around the house and with cooking). My school also had to drop Japanese too, which was terrible, considering that's what I took in middle school. But I've gotten around that.

Hello, well when I was in high school it was an option it was called Teen living. My friends who took the class said that the skills learned were managing money, cooking, sewing, and investing in the stock market. However, that was in the early 2000's here in Tennessee. A lot of schools have dropped classes like that due to cuts in education. Another thing is because of the government getting more involved with schools. Students in high school have to have so many credit hours that hardly anybody has time to take classes like that anymore. I want to think in my area students have to have 28 or 30 credits to graduate (I am not sure). I just had to have 24 to graduate.

We have multiple classes like that at my school FACS, food and nutrition, and child development. I don't think it's directed just at girls either. In fact I was one of three girls in my Food & Nutrition class. I haven't taken Child Dev. and I don't plan on it. But I've seen plenty of boys carrying about those terrifying fake electronic babies.

It's mandatory to have a semester here in the middle schools. Seventh grade is usually when you have the class. It was really a nice experience learning to cook and all haha. Though people were reckless and cut themselves at times...

My school still teaches economics.  There is still cooking class here (had to take in middle school, and optional in high school), and there is also child development classes (that every student has to take at some point for credits to graduate). Could be because of budget cuts that schools dropped the class.

Do you mean like home ec or whatever it is called? I had that in middle school but I don't think I have it in high school anymore, and if I do I don't think it is called the same thing, at first I thought you meant like personal finance and economics which is like the worst class ever. I enjoyed that class in middle school, it was pretty cool cooking stuff and learning about nutrition and teen living, it's all good stuff. It hasn't been dropped from my middle school because my sister is taking it now and she loves that class
