Doom - 32x We all should remember Doom. That PC game that everyone was getting hyped about over a year before release. When it hit the market that tiny little spark that made most games what they are today set the FPS genre on fire. People were wasting their lives sat in front of a monitor shooting the crap out of Zombies and Various other horrific enemies knee deep in the dead. While this game did cause a few controversies since it was so colorful it still made money and a ton of it, so much that other companies want to share the fame with some ports. You had the SNES which was 16-bit, the Atari Jaguar which was 64-bit but it only looked little over 32-bit and the Sega 32x which I am reviewing. So did this game kick just as much ass as the original? Not really here is why... Graphics I like to start on a positive, an well it almost seems like a tradition that I review the graphics first. The 32x port did an amazing job at the visuals. I was comparable to the original PC version which ran at almost the same rate and it was not far of the 64-bit, well 52.5-bit, Atari Jaguar. I think they focused too much on this though since parts of the game were missing. About half of the game was gone, which is embarrassing since the SNES port only managed to lose one episode of the complete game. There were also a few key features missing as well. Some of the secrets were missing and even the pillars on the first level are gone meaning the room where you get the armor for the first time is almost empty. You could just say that it is overwhelmed by the nice visuals but I would rather you didn't. You see this is just another example that it isn't about the graphics. Since Sega were still fighting in the bit wars I think they forgot what the point of doom was. Doom was meant to have good gameplay, the graphics didn't matter at all. Even the developer said "We focused on the gameplay rather than making it look stunning, we also made it possible to be played on almost any PC. I think we managed to get the FPS down to 16.8 with it still running smoothly". That was in an interview with IGN not so long ago and it just goes to show that they definitely didn't care too much about the visuals. This is what Sega didn't understand and it is a shame too. Sound This where Sega really messed up... What on earth did they take when they thought that sacrificing good quality music for good visuals. I have already ranted about this being wrong in the previous paragraph so now I am going to be focusing on the effects of it. I am not trying to be funny like the Angry Video game Nerd but the music really does sound like they have swapped the speakers with someones butthole. It isn't just the bass that sounds all farty, the whole thing sounds like some insane wet diarrhea. I am sounding very childish but the truth must be told and told without cussing. It is just embarrassing that they sacrificed such a good soundtrack like Doom's, especially with the theme of E1M1 that is no exception to this mess. I am ashamed. Not forgetting the SNES port did a much better job at emulating the original songs and that console was much less powerful. Addictiveness Of course they actually left the gameplay how it is, I wouldn't even review this game seriously if the sacrificed the addictive charm of the fast passed shooting of brute force, so it keeps the game playable. I can still come back to this game like I would to any Doom port but this certainly wouldn't be my first choice. Without some of the secrets and iconic sections of the game and missing levels not to forget the music, makes the game unplayable to an extent. If Sega did what ID did then this game would be amazing, they ignored the success almost and ruined the game, this makes it the worst licenced port (pirated ports are so bad they are funny). Difficulty You may of noticed that I missed out Depth but I really do feel that I have already covered it in previous sections. They are missing literally Levels and parts of levels too. That is really al there is to be said on the matter so I am moving on to the difficulty. I think this is another sacrifice too. The AI are just dumb in this port even in Nightmare. Enemies are still tough of course but they just don't seems as deadly as the original or on other ports. In nightmare it feels like Hurt me Plenty, Ultra Violence like Not Too Rough and I never even bothered to try anything lower than that. Long story short, this game is made easy which losses more of the fun. There is little challenge for someone with a decent experience with DOOM. Also most of the hard levels are not there since they were removed to favour the Visuals which I could go over myself again why that is a big mistake. Overall The developers of this port pretty much miss used the extra 16-bit that Nintendo didn't have. Some much could of been done to emulate the original PC game's amazing successful features and they blow it on the visuals. The Music is like reversed farting, There is so much missing you would think it is a beta, it is really easy and overall it is bad, really bad. If you want to play a good port of DOOM I don't recommend this at all. Go and Play it for the Xbox 360, I even prefer that one to the original or if you want to play a game on vizzed then play the SNES one. It is your best option. Just please, don't be fooled by the pretty face. We all should remember Doom. That PC game that everyone was getting hyped about over a year before release.
