The Mario brothers series is well know for enjoyable secrets, easter eggs and glitches. You mentioned the minus levels from the original Super Mario Bros and I have to agree that is something special. I had to search that one up to be able to actually pull off this gaming stunt and for that I did not enjoy it as much as you may of done if you found it yourself. The problem is people can just search up all of these secrets and glitches on my friend the internet but that sort of spoils the point of it being a secret!
I remember playing Super Mario World for the first time. Since it was quite recently, because I am young (14), I could of just search up every single secret on youtube, but at the time I just thought it was your typical mario game so I just assumed you pass through all of the levels to beat the game, I did not. So I would just go about through the levels casually and I would explore the levels by going through pipes and it felt good when I found the odd mini game, but I knew it obviously was not very secretive.
When I got to the level Donut Plains 1, the level when you first use the cape. I flew up to this ledge and there I found my first key and key hole. I picked the key up and, as you guessed, put it in the keyhole and boom! I had unlocked my first secret exit / level. There was a satisfying feel I got from this that I would not get if I searched it up. It was nice, I felt like I had become all of a sudden be good at the game which I eventually did become. I mean I beat the game in under 2 hours and probably a lot quicker if I tried to speed run it.
As I was saying, I got a good feeling from the secret even though I knew that 1000s of people will know this already. It is a shame I am to young to be part of the era when if you found a secret or an easter egg, you could well be the only person in the world to know about it, other than of course the developers...
