Serenity Rhodes had never felt so divided before in her life. Even though it has been eleven years since she had spoken to her estranged mother, she still felt loyal to her because the woman was the one who gave birth to her twenty-four years ago. However, she had no friends to return to and visit in Texas. Her sister refused to speak with her because of some unknown reason and half of her mother's family either ignored her or mooched off of her if she had something that she wanted. So why should she return to an unhappy place and especially if her letters were never received by her sister or her grandmother? The same letters that had been stolen by a certain someone that she was now sure of that had been responsible.
Not too long ago, Serenity had written letters to the two women but when she called them and asked if they received their letters, they had both said no. At the tender age of thirteen, she was rather naive about things and especially where her mother was concerned. She hadn't understood the situation between her mother and father, except that they had been divorced for sometime. Her mother had been upset when she decided to move to another state with her dad, whom she adored, and her step mom. A year after she had moved away, her mother gave her a call and wished her a happy birthday.
"Thanks."
"Would you like to visit me this summer?"
That had been the one question that Serenity wanted to avoid. Ever since she had left Texas, things in her life had improved for the better. She had friends that wanted to be with her and friends to play with out next door. Texas...there was none of that there. People avoided her and called her a freak because she was so shy and quiet, not to mention a nerd. Nobody wanted to play with her. She didn't want to go back there. Now that she had grown up to the point where she understood her surroundings, there was no way she could ever go back to an unhappy childhood.
"I'm sorry, Mom, but I don't think so. Not this summer."
Those were the words that set her mother off. Serenity had never heard her mother go off on anybody before. Her heart broke when her mother accused her of not loving her and it broke even more when she declared her own daughter as dead, essentially disowning her. Eleven years had passed since that day and, now, the young woman's mother reached out to her again on Facebook in an attempt to mend their broken relationship.
Should I? Serenity wondered.
It was a tough decision to make. She had gone eleven years without speaking to someone who was virtually a stranger and those were some happy years, but now she was at risk of getting her heart broken again. She sighed as she came to a decision. She pulled out her laptop and began to type.
