If we learn from our mistakes, why are we so afraid of making mistakes in the first place?

This made me think a little. However, I believe people do not want to make mistakes in the first place because no one wants to fail, especially in public. No one really likes to be reprimanded, but to people who do learn from their mistakes, those people realize that failing is a step forward, and they do not want public humiliation to keep them back. Also, i feel it is part of human nature to show your best side to others, not letting people see you fail or stumble. Many people want to impress others, may it be in a big way, or even in a small way. Me personally, I do not like to fail in front of others, but hey, I honestly learn a lot from mistakes, and that knowledge propels me forward. In a sense, making a mistake can help reveal new things to you. If you did not know a certain rule to something, and a higher authority tells you of the mistake, hey, you just acquired some useful knowledge. What do you think? Sidewinder : The purpose of mistakes is to learn from failure, so that we and others do not make the same ones again. In a way, it takes a mistake to prevent a mistake. But yes, I have to agree that human nature has a lot to do with it. A mistake to one person, may be the complete opposite for someone else. It has a lot to do with personal perception, but there's no arguing that wisdom is always to be gained. That's why I don't necessarily put an age on maturity. Although age usually means we have experienced more through time, there are some people that experience far more than others in a shorter amount of time. I think it also has a lot to do with the lifestyle one is born into. Personally, I'm not afraid of making mistakes- if anything, it just comes to show my humanity. Anyway, you pose a good question. Also, I think I know where you might have gotten that question. Anyway, you pose a good question. Also, I think I know where you might have gotten that question. |

I think we are afraid of making mistakes just because we hate being wrong. So when you think you are always right you start to think that making a mistake is horrible and to make a mistake you would have to be wrong. |

Well mistakes only occur when something goes wrong . Whether it be horribly wrong or fixably ( I just invented a new word ) wrong people don't want things to go wrong . Yes we as humans want things to go right . And if we do make mistakes then we learn from them in order for this to go right BUT if we did not make the mistake then the thing would haven't gone and would have gone right which means that we would not need to know what we did wrong because we did it right . So if we want things to go right we can learn from mistakes or not make them to learn them , because we would not need to learn what we already know . Complicated isn't it ? |

That would be because making a mistake, and screwing up are generally bad things. And they tend to have consequences, and nobody likes those. So that plays a big role in it. The other reason is people hate being wrong. Nobody likes knowing they're wrong, it's an ego thing also. That would be because making a mistake, and screwing up are generally bad things. I think that we are afraid of making mistakes because we don't like the fact that can make them, that there are still things we CAN learn, and I think that's why people are afraid of making mistakes. Not because they happen, but because of what that means. |

You answered your own question. No one is afraid of making mistakes, they're afraid of the rejection they get from others who witness their failures. I could make mistakes all day and no one sees and it's fine. As soon as it happens in public and in sight of others, we're embarrassed and ashamed because we didn't master a skill or perform as expected. Everyone fails and no one minds as long as they're not seen. Everyone fails and no one minds as long as they're not seen. |

I don’t know if afraid is necessarily the right word when it comes to people who have made mistakes, but do not want to repeat those mistakes or errors in judgment. No one is perfect. We are all human and everyone at one time or another will make a mistake. I know that I have made my share mistakes.
I think that when people make mistakes it can be part of a learning process and part of maturing. I believe though the key is to allow yourself after making a mistake to step back and say to yourself what did I do wrong and or, what can I learn from this that will help me from making mistakes in the future?
It’s really all part of the maturing process. I believe it's society's fault. Our schools are no longer based on learning. It's based on cramming information in short amount of times and then testing over it. You no longer have the time to make mistakes without big consequences. |

Very few people have brought up the point about consequences. Some have, but not many. If you don't make a mistake, the result is typically positive and things go how you want/need them to go. But making a mistake has consequences to deal with. I don't think it is making mistakes that people are afraid of, but the consequences that come with them. For example, my wife and I had a horrible landlord for a year. We wanted to move out as soon as our lease was up so we wouldn't have to deal with him anymore. I made the mistake of trying to call him to let him know instead of the written notification. I got a hold of him a week before that 30 day notification deadline. So stupid kept forgetting to get the actual written notification in. I got it in ONE DAY after the deadline (and mind you I was able to talk to him over the phone, so he was still notified). But because the actual written one wasn't in, he refused to let us leave without losing our deposit as well as paying for 12 months of rent up front. So we were pretty much stuck with him as our landlord for a whole extra year. Did I learn from that mistake? Yes. Do I think that the consequence fit the lesson. Absolutely not. I could have learned that same lesson with a MUCH less severe of a consequence. So it isn't making mistakes people are afraid of. It is dealing with the consequences that come with them. I think we as humans know that we are not perfect.. or at least those who know the actual truth.. we make mistakes all the time and when we learn it's a feeling of excitement.. and astoundment .. hope that we can do better and act better next time. We get scared or afraid because it's our body's naturel way of telling us that we want to do better.. we want to act better and .. making mistakes is just part of our life.. it really is bad when we learn from our mistakes but accidently commit another one.. sometimes it's like I just want to reach up high and never fall but I do fall because the truth is NOBODY is perfect on this earth except God and most need to come to the realization of it. Mistakes happen.. it's just life but we can try and change we can try and learn.. to grow and do better! It's all that matters in the end.

I think it is just a part of being embarrassed. We don't want to look bad in front of our peers. People will laugh and joke about it and most people don't want that. Another reason would be that it is frustrating. Say your playing a game and you see game over or your player dies at an important bit, you will get a little annoyed. We all want to be happy right? Well one of the things to do that is to not make mistakes. However, there are some mistakes you can just laugh off. Such as falling over and dropping something. But that is usually if it is a one off. If you keep falling over you will feel pissed like the previous reason. Another reason would be that it is frustrating. Mistakes can bring a lot of humiliation and rejection to people. It's not the humiliation part that scares me when I make a mistake, it's what that humiliation could possibly lead to. Most of the people you think are friends, are probably not real friends, because once you make that mistake they can easily detach from you and before you know it, you're lonely. Now granted if I'm afraid of that then I obviously need new friends, but there's not that many good friends around anymore. Many people just don't want to be recognized for being the one who made the mistake first. Many people know the saying "you learn from your mistakes", but don't you notice that people seem to make that mistake anyways, and others that witnessed it did as well? I believe they just don't want to be remembered for being the one who did the mistake first. Embarrassment is something no human wants, I guess it's also a part of survival instincts. If you look, you see the bigger people, ones who don't seem to make too may mistakes, seem to pick on the weaker people who always seem to be doing something wrong? People may see that, and go like,"Wow. I need to avoid people seeing my mistakes, I don't want to end up like that poor chap." And as I've seen a few other people say, many people just hate being wrong. If someone tells them they're wrong, they'll try to make it so they were right. Purely how humans have been shown to be: Always be right. If you do something wrong, you can't take that it was wrong, can't accept it. It's just how the human mind works. Mistakes aren't something people wish to make, even if they can help them in some cases. Embarrassment is something no human wants, I guess it's also a part of survival instincts. Everyone wants to try to make less or no mistakes at all in life to appear dominant. Perfection is the mind set inside of everyone in general. Mistakes are usually downfalls or negatives to people but if one works to change the result of it, the result can become something better. Not many people can admit to their mistakes based on the judgements of people. It's basically from a sociological perspective. One needs to understand that a mistake is like a warning before coming into a sudden tough obstacle which leads to more work in order to fix and prevent more certain situations from happening. Yet, we tend to fall onto these mistakes until we actually acknowledge, learn, and apply to them. Everyone makes mistakes, but no one wants to make them. Making a mistake is like announcing that you are a failure, and have messed up, whether that mess up was really bad or not depends on what someone does, and how others perceive that mess up. Usually though, when someone makes a mistake, they are immediately shunned or detested by other people. People ostracize them and criticize them for their mistakes, and usually the reprimanding is not in a nice, nor constructive way. You may learn from your mistakes, but it is the fear of making the mistake, and the fear of what will happen to you because of the mistake, not simply because you have made a mistake. People usually influence each other, and this is another one of said cases. |
