There are some shows who's theme song hasn't changed since the birth of the show.  Some of these shows include Spongebob Squarepants and The Office. In fact, I do believe most shows fall into this category.  I mean, Spongebob has been around since 1999! And The Office has been around since the year I graduated high school, 2005.

Then, there are other shows like Psych who make the effort to develop variations of the theme song every few shows.  Some shows even develop a whole new song for each season (though I can't think of any at the moment).

What do you prefer? Should shows stick to their original songs for the sake of tradition and familiarity?  Or should they freshen things up by changing their song.

I personally enjoy the variations in the theme songs and think it's a fun thing to do.  What shows sport some of your favorite traditional theme songs or varying theme songs?  Why?

One of the best examples of a change of theme song was Monk's theme song.  The theme song in the first season was different from the theme throughout the rest of the show.  Each theme song won an Emmy.

My favorite theme song growing up was the theme song to Yu-gi-oh! .  There were some minor changes from season to season, but the theme stayed mostly the same.  The theme song was basically one big mix of different sounds and stuff, and whoever did it did an amazing job, in my opinion.

supernerd117 :  Oh yeah, I'm glad you mentioned that. Monk did pop to my mind, but I wasn't certain if I was remembering that correctly or not, since it'd been awhile since I watched the show. Great show, that!

I like a lot of them, but some I hate and I want them to change. But I like them to change them from time to time, see what is inside their mind.

I like to change it up, and don't mind if it changes the theme song. However if they change a character/get rid of one and get a new theme song I hate the theme song. Like in the office, when Steve Carrel left I stopped watching. (I loved the fight episode with Dwight and Michael though XD).

Some of my favorite shows have theme songs that stay the same throughout the entire run. To be honest I can't think of any where "I can't miss an episode" that have a changing theme song.

Some examples of shows that are my favorites AND the theme song is the icing on the cake -

With this one the opening credits changed depending on what universe or time line the episode took place in but not the music. (listening to it gave me goose bumps!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JR-9uK6xPa0

And this one the opening sequence changes depending on where the episode takes place but not the music. (More goose bumps.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2c2001OhMso

I guess the thing that intrigues me about both of these examples is that the music is fantastic and stays the same but the opening sequence changes based on plot development.

Another vote for "stays the same".

Well I think some theme songs should change every so often, yet they shouldn't change it like Pokémon does, I'm a fan of Pokémon but the theme song changes every season . I think theme songs should only change every two years or so.

I find it more amusing if it changes more often.

I know someone above already contradicted this, but I personally enjoy how Pokemon changes their theme song every season. I mean, sure, sometimes, the theme songs aren't always perfect, but some of them ended up being my favorites.
