As I am an insomniac I can't help but wonder how people manage to get their 6-8 hours so easily. Is there some kind of trick to it or is my brain just conspiring against the rest of my body??I'm currently taking meds and I'm going to have a sleep study soon but I just thought it wouldn't hurt to ask around and see how normal people pass out. I have a friend who takes cat naps and works graveyard so I KNOW everyone sleeps differently. Lets hear your stories eh?

Please note that you don't really need to give me any instructions on the art of sleeping I have plenty of help from friends as it is. I'm just trying to make small talk in the most awkward way possible! (aaaaaaand I haven't made a thread In a while... hehe.)

Edit: weird issue with the thread title.

Edit AGAIN: I just realized this thread may have been much better placed in the health section of the forums... apologies in advance and if you can transfer me over I'd appreciate it XD

Final Edit: Thanks Juliet!

Well I have similar problems like you so.....It takes me like 2-3 hours before I get in my deep sleep and I position my body in a comfortable way. So when I wake up I don't get body aches but, when I wake up I can't move or I will fall down because of the amount of deep sleep I had but, my mother told me.....when she sees me in the middle of the night  sleeping. There are times I stop breathing....then I will start again...that really made me worry...

Usually it takes me about 10 minutes to fall asleep. For the first minute I adjust myself to a comfortable position and then after that I try for a few minutes to fall asleep and then I do easily.

I am an insomniac as well. But I've learned how to sleep well enough to last a day at school. I usually only sleep for 4 to 5 hours, then I wake up, but that's good enough. Really, you can't "will" yourself into sleeping. You just need to let go, relax, and get into a position where you find it most comfortable, and just lay there, emptying your mind. You brain just slows down and you sleep naturally after that.

I lay down in bed and play games and such on my phone. Eventually my eyes will get really heavy. I will put down my phone and go to sleep.

Yeah believe me I am an insomniac as well, it takes me forever to actually fall asleep, but with school back in my schedule, I am starting to get back in the swing of going to bed earlier. I stay up sometimes and listen to my music, play a game on my ds or post on vizzed late in the night because I just can seem to fall asleep. I also sometimes get broken up sleep which sucks. I am tired from a long day of school and I will take a nap for an hour or so. Some nights I sleep well and get 10 hours of sleep or more and other nights I barely get any sleep at all and I wake up tired and go on the day with little too no energy and I have to will myself to be awake during class so I won't miss information. So yeah it is hard for me to fall asleep.

You shouldn't have to will yourself to fall asleep. It's a natural daily cycle that - normally - should automatically just happen, without you having to think about it. Insomnia is a disorder where your brain and body are somehow not working correctly when it comes to this natural cycle of falling asleep and staying asleep.

It's not your fault. That being said, you can't really ask us for advice, because we cannot help you treat this disorder. If your quality of life is being affected by how little sleep you are getting, you should definitely see a doctor.

Personally, I sometimes have issues falling asleep quickly as I would like, but it's for measurable reasons. One thing that prevents me from going to sleep is using the computer right before trying to go to bed, because it makes my mind too active. Looking at light sources, studying, working or watching films directly before going to bed can sabotage you, because it takes awhile for your mind to "calm down" afterwards. I find that meditating, reading a book (not using light that's too bright), listening to relaxing audio, eating something warm, or simply turning most of the lights off in my house, helps my mind and body wind down before bedtime.

I usually try to sleep just by laying in bed and daydream with my eyes close. Sometimes I drift to sleep in a few and other times, it takes a while. Sometimes I listen to my mp3 or use my tablet when I can't sleep right away.

I usually get to sleep pretty fast, and sleep pretty well after I do. I used to have a lot of trouble sleeping, it would take me hours to get to sleep, but I'm doing better with that now. I don't get enough sleep though, I go to sleep too late.

I get to sleep after listening to the radio for an hour and then it takes me about half an hour to finally fall asleep. I like to sleep because the time flys!

I never got any sleep in my school days. It got to such a point to where at one point I just laid in my bed the whole day trying to sleep. Even now, I can barely sleep that well. I have tried countless times to improve my sleeping habits. I spend most of my time on the computer so I use F.Lux, a program that adjust to the time of day from cooler to warmer colors. Its easy on the eyes but doesn't help me. That is just one example but either way I never got any sleep. But now this may sound a bit cheesy, but the thought of my wife with me kind of calms me and helps me sleep. So now I get about 4-6 hours.

It may vary from person to person. There are times when I get to the point of when I can't sleep, one way is to do some work during your awake hours so that way it will make your body physically tired and wanting to get some sleep.

I am not a good sleeper, when I get in bed I have to lie flat on my back because if I am in any other position, I will literally never fall asleep. (Yes, I tried it. I tried sleeping on my side and stomach and I was fully awake from 11PM all the way until 6AM.) Even when I am in my correct position, it still takes at least 30 minutes to fall asleep.

I have a lot of sleeping problems... due to my sleeping disorder.. usually I stay up for hours and if I can't find something to do.. I end up listening to songs or playing games for an hour or 2 until I actually feel like resting.. it sucks.. I can't give you any advice because I am out of advice for myself.. I hope you can start sleeping better someday.. I also take meds but it takes somewhat a while to work at times.. an sometimes it doesn't work at all.

I usually sleep too much once I get started. I don't normally drink any caffeinated drinks at night and my only problem would be using the computer right before going to bed. I usually exercise on the treadmill or do a few core exercises before bed and a hot shower helps to clear my mind. I fall asleep pretty readily after that.
