Ah shrek, he has got to be without a doubt one of the most famous dreamworks characters of all time, His films have made so much money in the box office that Disney and dreamworks started competing with eachother! Now I was browsing through toys'r'us and I was so pumped when I found a new shrek game for the game boy color! The only thing is...well...you'll find out.
Story-N/A I don't think this game is supposed to have a story! Oh well, that's how it goes in these kind of games! Anyways, let's skip this, on to the gameplay!
Gameplay-4/10 Shrek fairytale freakdown is, no surprise, a 2D fighting game, now this may sound good on paper, but let me tell you that the gameplay leaves alot to be desired, There are 2 main game modes, Arcade and practice, In arcade you pick out a character and proceed through a story like adventure, In practice mode you can pick out your own character and brush up on your skills. The characters from the film are all here, Shrek, fionna, farquaad, but there is no donkey! Wow TDK, Way to show false advertising. The controls are fairly simple, A is punch, B is kick, and you press the D-pad up in order to jump. Fighting your enemies is easy and doesn't take alot of skill, Just mash the B button, and you are on a roll. You know what, I can't do this, on to the graphics!
Graphics-4/10 This was 2001, and I know that the game boy color and Nintendo 64 were becoming dead consoles at the time, But TDK, this is what you give us? Right off the bat you get without a doubt one of the scariest title screens in the history of gaming, It's shrek crushing a knight, This may sound OK, But the animation used is creepy! As for the actual in game graphics, they are bleh, Each of the levels you will be fighting in are just your typical stuff, Swamps, castles, forests, rooftops, etc. As for the characters, they look OK, Shrek looks like himself, Fiona looks like herself, But Donkey is only seen on the main menus!
Sound-5/10 The sound in this game is nothing to write home about, It's just your typical stock music just put there in order to fit the mood of each level, Right off the bat you get your typical Game boy color-like music, But the actual music on the battle stages is just, I don't know, repetitive! There is no way to turn off the music or sound effects, All there is is just the difficulty level, which I don't know why is there because the game itself is pretty darn easy. There are some sound effects, but they are very quiet.
Addictiveness-4/10 Is this a game that is worth playing? Well golly! You play the game one single time and worse, there is no actual free play mode of any sort! There is just practice mode and that is it! I remembered playing this back in the day for the first time and putting the game in my closet for one month until I decided to play it again, I didn't even notice It was still there!
Depth-3/10 Absolutely no depth or replay value at all, The game lasts as long as an episode of spongebob squarepants, You can unlock all the characters very easily and once you do so, You won't find any much reason to play It, besides, the game uses some useless password save, I never found any use for this, because the game is pretty short!
Difficulty-4/10 The game can pretty darn easy for the most part! Like I said, if you want to win a match, just keep mashing the B button until your opponent's health bar is empty! I remember this game offering actually no and I say NO challenge at all when I first played it, Oh well, I was little back then!
Overall-4.5/10 If you want a good shrek game, Then I would rather suggest you buy shrek super slam for the Gamecube, or heck buy the shrek 2 video game! These are both games that you can play with friends, and offer so much more then this. You guys should know why I rated this game a 4.5, anyways, just avoid this game, It sucks, I want to nail shrek on the freaking cross.
