I remember playing Hamtaro Ham-ham Heartbreak when I still had my GBA; and after playing it again here on Vizzed, I decided to make a review out of it. Hamtaro - Ham-ham Heartbreak is the second game of the series (first for the GBA) that is based off of the Hamtaro anime. The player must use Ham-chats (the game's action commands) in order to figure out what must be done to progress throughout the game.
__________

Graphics - 10

Although there is the case where not every hamster is physically unique, there is no doubt that they are incredibly cute! And having over 86 different physical and facial animations, the game does not fail to provide adorable and likable graphics for all ages.

The charming chibi design of Hamtaro - Ham-ham heartbreak has the most appealing graphics the Gameboy Advance has to offer. If I had to simplify my description, they are basically the Hamtaro anime in 16-bit format.

[Breakdown]
-Cute graphics.
-Over 86 different animations.
__________

Sound - 6

In the title scree, the player will be greeted by the GBA version of 'Hamtaro Time', which is the Hamtaro anime show's theme song. This song is the first Ham-Jam (will explain in Depth) out of the 10 available.

Each new map has its very own theme; some locations within the map occupying the same themes. They are very delightful to hear, albeit they can be quite repetitive. Most people would get annoyed at the BGM after staying in one map for a certain amount of time.

The squeaky sound effects can be pretty perky as well, but they can get unfortunately annoying. Ham-chats are usually accompanied by SFX to raise its cuteness level. They are cute, but they can get irritating since the use of Ham-chats are frequent.

[Breakdown]
-BGM gets repetitive.
-SFX are cute, but can get annoying.
__________

Story - 8

The prologue shows one very bad hamster, Spat, trying to destroy everyone's love -- whether it be platonic or romantic. Hamtaro (the player) and partner Bijou must stop Spat from his evil doing while restoring love for all hamsters.

The story contains a lot of innocent gags and humor, as it is rated E by the ESRB. Some of the humor may come from the facial expressions of the chibi hamsters, while others may come from ironic situations. Whatever the case, the lovable content leaves a great impression of the game.

[Breakdown]
-Hero must stop bad guy.
-Partner that follows you everywhere.
-Innocent, but lovable humor.
__________

Depth - 7

During the storyline, the player can unlock many different mini-games. All of these mini-games require certain Ham-chats to be used. If a Ham-chat has not been taught yet, the player cannot play the mini-game that requires it.

There are many things the player can do to take a rest from the storyline. For example, the player can play dress-up and take photos with Hamtaro and Bijou, or the player can choreograph dance moves using Ham-chats on Ham-Jams. Perhaps they wish the rub rocks to find precious gems.

Some things may be unlocked after the storyline; and some things may only be completed after it as well. The accessory store can only be unlocked after the storyline, the player can create accessories from the gems they acquired and use them in their photos. The Ham-chat dictionary and the gem stone encyclopedia can only be completed after the storyline.

However, the mini-games aren't available in any other difficulty modes; they can become tedious after some time. Even collecting data for whatever encyclopedic things the game has to offer is too easily done.

[Breakdown]
-Many different mini-games.
-Encyclopedic collecting.
-Post storyline unlockables.
-Set levels/cannot change difficulty.
__________

Addictiveness - 5

Will I want to play this game again after completing it? Maybe in a few years. The main storyline of this game is rather predictable, and a lot of the actions done are repetitive. Hero beats bad guy and saves the world; everyone's happy. Not to mention that this game provides only one way of beating it. So unless one enjoys doing things over and over the exact same way, this game is not very addicting.

[Breakdown]
-Too repetitive.
-Replay for nostalgic purposes only.
__________

Difficulty - 4

Maybe a 5 for those who are impatient. This game is really too easy to beat. In fact, there is no such thing as a 'Game Over'. So basically, it's impossible to lose. You may fail to do a certain task, but the game will push you to try again until you get it right. That is the only way to progress in the game. If stuck at a certain situation, other hamsters may give out hints on what must be done next. The difficulty comes from trying to figure out these riddles, and how to solve them physically once it's found out (which is usually done by repeating certain commands until a new solution is discovered).

[Breakdown]
-Too easy.
-No 'Game Over'.
-May give headache to the impatient.
__________

Overall - 8.5

Hamtaro - Ham-ham heartbreak is usually not seen as a 'must play' for most people, but it will entertain for a while if one decides to play. While the game-play may be too redundant, it is enjoyable. If I had to compare it to a book, I would say it is most likely a children's fable tale. It may not be as alluring as reading a romantic novel or a crime drama, but it definitely is a pleasant experience. It comes with morals too.

[Summary]
-Repetitive, but enjoyable.
-Has the charm of story-told fables.

UFC :

The game play is based off of the anime, which means that it mostly deals with what the hamsters in the anime does. Since the anime is a children's show, it doesn't have any of the attacking and killings things like a traditional RPG. In a way, it is an RPG though.

Anyone know how to undo summons? LOL

EDIT-

I take back what I said about not being able to attack. You can attack in this game, but it's not strong enough to actually kill someone. I always do it for laughs.

EDIT2-

Nevermind, I figured out how to take out the summons from my review.

Not a bad review at all. You broke down the categorizes well in a neatly executed manner and providing valid reasoning behind why you rated categories what you rated them and the review reads and flows nicely. Furthermore I enjoyed reading your review although I don't have much interest in the game its self. I see no grammar or punctuation mistakes.Your review reads easy but I would suggest further in depth and more detail in to the categories and your spacing is a little confusing in certain parts in the review but other than that great job here and I can't wait to read more reviews from you.

Divine Aurora :

Oh, the breakdown portion is to provide people who don't like reading through long text on reviews. Some people like to read reviews that are straight to the point rather than detailed. I'm like that myself sometimes, so I can understand why they would want a laconic portion rather than a detailed one.

Mistress : Oh ok I understand that. Although I am not one of those people, I would rather read through a full review  because it helps me grasps the game better and have a better feel on what I'm about to/expect to experience from a game before I play it. Anyways well done with the review and keep on reviewing I would love to see and read more reviews by you!

Sounds like a good game to play! Loads of details and you have just the right amount of words for a perfect review! I think this was a positive game review to read! Anyway keep up the good work.

I like the breakdown sections.  I think that they add a lot to the review.  That said, I think you rated the game a bit too high, in my opinion.  I haven't played the game yet, but it sounds like there's a lot of repetitiveness throughout the game, a short game, that said.  The sound, as you stated, can get irritating at times.  Despite the wonderful look and cute feel of the game, I feel the other factors bring it down a good bit.  The review made it seem that the game was more of a solid 7.0 game, instead of an 8.5.  Work on your scoring system a bit.  As for the review; however, well done.
