The pineal gland is very small, and is found surrounded by the brain deep in the middle of your head. It is an "endocrine gland" meaning it secretes hormones directly in your body.

It's not one of the "big important" glands, but it does have an important job. What it's mostly responsible for, among other little things, is the secretion of the hormone Melatonin. Melatonin is thought to set your sleep-wake biological clock. In other words, telling your body when to sleep and when to wake. You actually produce more melatonin in the dark, so it's always a better idea to sleep with the lights mostly off than in bright areas.

Other than that, it helps with the production of a few other regulatory hormones, but humans are still learning about it.

Except for what I just read in the post above me, I know nothing.  I never knew it existed, nor had I ever heard of it.  It's strange because my wife is in the medical field and all her friends talk shop when we go out to the bar.  I just asked my wife and she said it resides in the brain, has something to do with hormones and functions along with the pituitary gland but don't take her word for it.

She basically shrugged at me and said, "Dunno."

No I don't know what the Pineal Gland was until I read Light Knights post. To be honest I did have a thought of what I thought you were referring had something to do with the male sexual reproduction organ but I was wrong it has nothing to do with that and thanks Light Knight for shareing a little bit of information about what the Pineal Gland is.

To be honest, I had to peek at my physiology book to refresh my memory. We don't speak often of it, seeing as it's not as important as many other glands (like the thyroid, pituitary, adrenal, etc)

Light Night you are pretty smart considering you answer most of these questions off the top of your head.

The pineal gland also produces small amounts of dimethyltryptamine. A drug that causes extreme hallucinations. Not as much as you'd get from ayahuasca though.
