Another "Nerd News Reporter" Brought this to my attention.
I honestly am waiting for someone to tell me I am not awake yet or I am reading something that is false.
I'll provide a link and you guys can read and add up the facts or research it yourselves.

http://dailycaller.com/2013/06/27/texas-teen-makes-violent-joke-during-video-game-is-jailed-for-months/

There is a petition as well. I will not make any requests but for people to think for themselves.

Good Luck.

Good Luck To All.
I'm done. Stick a fork in me.
Peace.

Now that that's out of the way? I feel as though it is a touch too much to have a teen spend his 19th birthday in jail over a jest. (Just a thought.)

That is completely insane. Jailing someone for a comment they made on a video game is just too much. I'm fine with taking my shoes off at the airport, that's just being careful. But that is one of the furthest things from a terrorist threat that I have ever heard, I don't know why any judge would convict a kid for that.

Ok, first, it really wasn't during League of Legends. In fact, IIRC, it didn't relate to it at all. He posted the "joke" on Facebook, which I found from a different source I can't find.

Next, the joke wasn't just something like a "Knock knock" joke, it was (to quote) "Oh yeah, I’m real messed up in the head, I’m going to go shoot up a school full of kids and eat their still, beating hearts lol jk" (from your source), and the cause of alarm was how close he lived to an elementary school.

Generally, if you say stuff like this (whether it be a joke or not), it's equivalent to saying "I'm gonna blow up the White House and ride a motorcycle into the distance lol jk", which is to say can be considered an actual threat of terrorism.

Regardless, I feel no pity for him. If the genius seriously thought saying stuff like that is really necessary or even appropriate in a society shaken by daily shootings, then he deserves what he got.

Who knows, had he not been arrested, he very well MAY have done something. Not saying this goes for EVERY situation, but still, there's the possibility.

MegaRevolution1 :
Nice opinion.
I hope you have an even harder time with your teen years than the person in question is. You seem to have a mind for such challenges.
Good Day.

I'm not foolish enough to make a 'joke' saying I'll shoot up a school. Plus, from the sound of it, it seems like the guy stays home all day, if he's 19 and really needed his dad defending him in such a manner.

Also, keep in mind, the article stated "Authorities noted that recent school shootings like the one in Newtown, Connecticut have caused them to evaluate all potential threats seriously." This happened in February too, only around two months after the Connecticut shooting that occured in December. As such, they had full rights and responsibilities to report it to authorities.

Not to mention, if he DID end up actually shooting up a school, this thread would probably go something like "Our justice system is awful! Why didn't they pick up on the signs!? It was so painfully obvious, F+++ humanity!", but instead, we have neckbeards saying it's an injustice because it was on a popular game and meant as a "joke".

A little common sense would say "DON'T SAY THIS STUFF".

This doesn't surprise me anymore. Let's face it, most of the online community, adolescent teen or not, is making these "jokes" daily. The fact that someone is jailed for doing this is surprising to me. All I have to say is if you stick this kind of action in the Xbox Live community or even PSN, a lot of people would be jailed.

Again, this is also paranoia to the brim. A woman calling the police for a sarcastic joke is pretty extreme, even if it's threatening lives of children that are conveniently next to his house.

My point would be similar to Mega's. Don't say that stuff. Not many people take people's lives as a punchline.

I can't seem to let this story go.
Excuse me if no one wants to agree with me. (I really don't care. But its always nice to be nice.)

I find it amazing how people are too willing to give up their own rights for something as silly as this.
This story is Not about teaching a kid to not be insensitive.
This is a story about any person that can be jailed and sentenced for not watching their mouth?
We have Documents that are 200 years old that are in place to protect the innocent.
Not Jail every person with out the best sense of humour.

For anyone that thinks that this can not happen to them? I can't wish them luck for being so naive.

This story is beyond retarded.

I wish it were a waste of my time. But it is not. We all need to be aware of such events.
Does not matter if we like it or if it ruins a good mood day.

You got the News Link.
You can do with it what ever you wish. Just thought you folks should know.
Good Luck.

Good Luck To All.
Peace.

orionfoxgibson : This isn't violating any rights of his at all... Check out the fourth Amendment of the Bill of Rights.
It basically says they can't make an arrest without probable cause, and what do you know! The "joke" right there fits the keyhole perfectly!

If it were an "I think" matter, then it'd be outrageous. But in this case, there's full proof sticking out- All they need to be able to put him on trial and in jail.

There was no "injustice" or "rights being taken away", things were going just as they should have.

At least the media can't try and blame "the liberals" for this one... it was in Texas.

So, what happened to the bravado of "no one would take that in Texas, since we all have guns" response that I kept hearing after Aurora and Newtown? Not so tough when it actually seems like a real threat, now are you, Texans?

Seriously though, it was a joke in poor taste and I have no sympathy for internet trolls like this kid. I had a screwed up adolescence as well, but I would never had made jokes like that because I knew that people would take that crap seriously.

Elara :
No one mentioned political party stuff but you on this one.
This is more of a legal or illegal? Question.
Who is with what party will not jail or set this kid free.

Though I am glad you have an opinion that this may be political.
I have no info on that kind of stuff.

I have not contemplated the matter that deeply yet.
Plus, I do not care to.

Good angle though. I never would have suspected that "left wing" or "right wing" might be related to that kind of criminal activity in America.

I do not have time for that stuff. Makes for great Television though. ("The Truth is out there".)

Please feel free to clear up any misguided areas that this case might bring up.
I promise you have everyone's full and undivided attention on this.

Good Day.
Good Luck.
Peace.

orionfoxgibson : I agree with aspects on both sides of the issue. For one, I definitely think that it's egregious to think that someone can potentially be jailed for up to 8 years for making an air-headed and ignorant comment like he did, but I definitely think that some sort of punishment should be had because of what he said and his proximity to an elementary school. People need to learn that there are consequences to your actions, and you are responsible for your words, regardless of whether you say "lol" or "jk" after it. A week in jail? Even a month? Maybe. It'll hopefully teach the kid not to be a moron and talk like that. But eight years in jail will literally ruin the kid's life, and it will make things so much harder for him once he gets out. I think that's absolutely ridiculous, and the government should never have the power to give such terrible punishments for threats.

If anything, they should just use his statement as a reason to get a warrant to search his house. If he's all clear, meaning that there is no indication that he's planning an attack on a school or at a mall, then he should be let free or given a small punishment. There needs to be evidence to convict someone, especially for a serious crime that carries such a harsh penalty, and I don't think the words are enough for that. Still, the kid needs to be smart about what he says and aware of his surroundings. Stupidity, especially of that magnitude, should not be rewarded with a free pass.

pray75 : They should not NEED to search his house. While being cautious is never a bad thing, there is such thing as being paranoid. They are far too quick to jump to conclusions. I have actually said many, many controversial things through my life, but I'm lucky that the British government is a lot less paranoid, but they are getting there. I don't think that any real punishment was ever in order. The fact that the police got themselves involved is reason enough for him not to do it again. Jail is likely to just make the problem worse on both sides.

orionfoxgibson :

Clearly you were not reading the comments on that article with them complaining that Austin is too liberal... I know people from Austin. Yes, they are more liberal... but they are still Texans.

Was it legal? Yes. Was the sentence logical? No, it was overly harsh.

That said, ignorance of the world around you is not a defense. It never has been and never will be.

Why the current generation of teenagers is so uninformed about what is going on around them is beyond me. There is more to your existence than what goes on in your video game, it affects you and you should care about it. A lot.

Making a joke about shooting up a school right after the shooting in Newtown... you don't do that if you have a brain! And "lol jk" doesn't get you off the hook either... because it's online type and they cannot tell if you are serious or not. You think that killers don't use "lol jk"?

I think the kid should be punished, since he did a very stupid thing. But, I don't think he should get 8 years, since it's rather obvious that he was just some ignorant kid who thought he was funny. Something like two years of mandatory community service would be better... it isn't jail time and it forces him to become aware of what the hell is going on outside of his home. Win/win, right?

Something like two years of mandatory community service would be better... it isn't jail time and it forces him to become aware of what the hell is going on outside of his home. Win/win, right?

Elara :
There is a phrase from "Confucius" that goes a little something like "Do not use the cannon to swat the fly."
Our Law enforcement are needed for real crimes.
Not as a private "Gestapo" for "preferred behaviour".
This is not making my country safer.

The political stuff you mentioned? Again?
You are either better informed or completely insane. I care not which. I will not waste any more of my time by reading any of your posts from this point on.

This is a tale about a Kid who's life is ruined and his family's reputation is tarnished. You want to bring up "Politics" for a story like this?
Is this what the Judge should tell the kids parents if he sentences the boy?

I am not a therapist but I suggest you get help.
Oh no. Now I've done it.
Someone might call the cops on you for your silly assumptions regardless of how innocent.
I'll stop talking now.
Good Day.
Peace.

"Pray 75" ???
Yes, I think that proper procedure or what ever the police call "S.O.P." should have been employed if it was not. (The way the story goes? Suggests otherwise.)
I can't help but think this is something that should be handled as similar as a routine "911 Prank Call" or something. (Not exactly for punishing the kid but rather the person that reported him.)

The part I do find odd is the magic number of "8 years".
A different case on a kid who stole a traffic sign happened when I was a teen and that dude was sentenced to 8 years. (At least that is what my memory recalls.)
The difference?
The Sign Theft resulted in a Brutal Collision. Lives were injured and lost.

This kid was just on the net being a typical looser kid typing up a bunch of stuff.
Not one shred of evidence to prove this kid is a danger in the slightest manner.
All is "Hearsay" and typed up internet stuff Without proper interpretation.
No one has yet to be reported injured or dead as a result of the kids actions.
(Just a thought.)

Good Luck To All.
I'm done. Stick a fork in me.
Peace.

You know who else got a ruined reputation because of something they said? Hitler.

Also, there are no reports yet probably because he hasn't gotten the chance to do anything. Were there any reports on the people who did the Columbine Massacre before it happened? Or how about Sandy Hook? I'd be willing to bet my non-existant lunch money there weren't.

(and yes, I know how you said on my profile how you'll be "ignoring" my posts, but between you and me, we know you won't follow through )

orionfoxgibson : One thing I mentioned was political and it was in direct response to something that YOU said.

This event did not occur in a vacuum no matter how much you seem to think that it did. Clearly you didn't actually read any of what I actually said since I did partially agree with you that 8 years is ridiculous.

If you cannot be bothered to pay attention to context of events and understand a bit more of WHY this happened, then you are part of the problem and will never understand it.

And a little bit of a side note: Just because you disagree with part of what is said, or because you lack the interest or ability to engage in mature civil discourse does not make the people you are talking with "insane". Internet troll tactics don't work here. Insulting me doesn't mean you win, it means that you can't support your own position and shouldn't post in the Debate forum in the first place.

I don't get it why they did this, if they did it to that person, then why aren’t they doing any of those gamers that plays Cod, Halo, or and other FPS games, like really? It doesn't make any sense what so ever.

Hey, Orionfoxgibson.  I'm going to rape your mother and burn your house down after I stab your dad in the face. jk lol!

There are many things not protected by the 1st Amendment in the U.S.: Perjury, child pornography, defamation, incitement to lawless action, solicitation to commit crimes, threats, and so on.

There is no way you can hear or read someone saying they're going to execute children in a school and think of it as humor.  Considering we've had more school shooting from white American males than any other demographic, this is something they want to check out.

Heck, we should just have everyone running around threatening everyone else all the time.  Let's all threaten to kill children, the elderly, rob each other, and murder each other.  That's just good old-fashioned fun right there!

warmaker :
What a wonderfully WEAK statement to make.
I pity you.
I honestly do.

I never needed an army behind my back to ever respond to the slightest of crazy statements.
It is beautiful that the documents and ideals that many have fought for are now rendered useless.
I just thought it to be wise to inform people of this event because it is in fact news.
People do not like it? Do something about it.
Otherwise? Do not waste my time.

Welcome to America. Land of the "used to be free."
Good Luck.

Good Luck To Us All.
