Legend of the Axem Rangers is a hack based off the original Super Mario RPG that explains the back story of the Axem Rangers and how they came to be. Thus this makes the hack a prequel to Super Mario RPG.
The story is about Red, who is on a mission to find his sister Pink. He first goes to Bowser's Keep in hoping to find her but he has no luck and he meets his rival Torte there as well. After an earthquake in the Keep, Red goes flying to the depths of Barrel Volcano and there he meets Yellow, who was back stabbed by his clan, the Axer Squad and his creation, Blade, was also stolen by the Squad. The two goes on an adventure meeting new people, friends, and enemies.
As far as graphics and music go, the music remains the same from the original game's soundtrack, while the graphics have new pallets for some enemies and backgrounds.
The game play remains the same too except for some new weapons, spells, and altered stats for the party.
Overall, this hack is pretty decent but it is fatally flawed and obviously rushed and untested. There are problems with random freezing which forces the player to use save states, random and unexplained slow downs, and there's a difficulty spike midway thru the game that may require assistance with cheat devices (I had to.)
I give this game a 7/10
PROS:
Original story
New playable characters
scripts and triggers are entirely new from the ground up with few exceptions such as the garden intro.
CONS:
Random freezing and slowdowns
Becomes way too difficult too fast
Certain parts of the game there's no way to backtrack.
