Has something like this ever happened to you?

(English is my first language)I have been learning French for about six years now. It has almost gotten to the point where I almost talk to myself in my head in French. It's pretty odd. This one time I thought of the French word for an object before I could come up with the English word. It's actually kind of neat that I'm starting to be able to do these things. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

This has never happened to me personally, I have a really hard time learning languages. In school they attempted to teach me French, I think I must have picked up maybe 6 or 7 words of it, the rest I just couldn't remember.

Well, I know a fair bit of Japanese (self taught) but I have never thought of the Japanese word first - though that is mainly because of how that language actually works.

This happens to me quite often...

Spanish is my first language, but, sometimes I talk to myself on English (Language I've been learning for coincidence, I would say, since I was kid, around 4 or 5,) or whenever I'm reading or listening to something, I always try to translate the words.

Weird, huh?

Yes it happens to me as well. My first language is Filipino, but I often find myself speaking in english inside my head. It's been part of the schools' curriculum after all, for like hundreds of years... and our teachers or even the other staff usually speak in english, we also have english speaking zones where you must not speak in Filipino or in other dialects, and... we have to speak in English even in classrooms for our foreign classmates to keep up with the discussions and lessons. It's suffocating.

MoblinGardens : Almost all the time. My first language is English, but my second one is Dutch, as I come from the Netherlands. I probably speak better Dutch then I speak English. I always talk to my family in Dutch, and I got Dutch at school. So yeah, it happens.

No it hasn't because I'm only in 7th grade and I only got to take Spanish for the 1st trimester of school and it was easy to learn overall, but I can't remember second languages that easily without thinking for quite a few minutes and then finally remembering at least one Spanish phrase from way back at the beginning of the year.

Unless you count a School required language class (Mine happens to be French) or an unnecessarily large love for Anime, (which is Japanese, or whatever you'd call it if there's a language of imitation) I have no second language that I'd use by heart. Just English.

MoblinGardens : Haha, I know what you mean. My mother tongue is German, but sometimes the English words come in my mind before the German words. That was actually pretty funny and surprising, when that first happened to me,  because I usually only use English in English lessons in school and in the internet (for vizzed for example) or games etc. I think, things like these improved my English better than I used to think.

Other languages I know a bit from are French (because I had two years of it in school), Japanese (Animes, lol. I even taught myself a few katakana and hiragana out of boredom), Dutch (Lots of similar words to German and English), Latin and Greek(mainly because of famous quotes or words with Latin/Greek origin). My Spanish and Italian knowledge is very little.
There are a few more languages, but I wouldn't understand anything if I would read something in these languages.

Since I'm from Holland, also known as the Netherlands, my main language is Dutch.
Even though I speak Dutch as my main language, I prefer speaking English.
I also speak few words Spanish, I've also had French class for 3 years but I barely remember anything.
And I also speak German.
There's only one other language I would love to learn, and that would be Korean.

English is my second language, and I've been learning it (mainly out of school) for most of my life. In some situations, the word either comes in English first or the French (my first language) equivalent makes less sense. However, my structure of thinking is still almost all in French

My first language is English. In my school they attempt to teach me how to speak Arabic.
I sort of know how to speak Arabic but my English is a lot better.
My Arabic grades in school is around an 85%-90%.

My first language is Portuguese, but I know basically everything about English , so sometimes when I'm angry at people I call them names in English so that they don't understand. I know that's pretty bad, but its also fun.

This happens to me all the time... You start thinking about something without even noticing that. On the beginning, it would bug me a lot, but nowadays I kinda got used to it, since it happens so often. People shouldn't worry about that, I guess it's just a consequence when you use it so much. You see, in my case, even with Portuguese being my primary language, I use English a lot, so this happens often, even though I learned English mostly by myself (English classes at school here in Brazil are almost useless, especially on Public School...).
