Topic might be a little difficult to understand what I mean, but I'll clear it up.

So I can assume that a lot of people on Vizzed have taken courses that they didn't like or didn't understand why this is a required course. So I figure I put out this question to the vizzed community...

How would you improve your school's education?

What I mean by that is the following...
1. Should some classes be longer or shorter?
2. Should some classes be optional while others mandatory for graduation?
3. Should some classes orders be rearranged (like American History be taught first before Global History).

I should point out that I'm speaking from a High School point of view. To help you get an idea as to what I'm trying to talk about, he is my ideas as to how school education should improve...

1. Computer and Technology Classes Become Mandatory for Graduation- I think that since we live in a period where technology plays a dominate role, that the future generations know how to use technology. They should be able to debug a computer, create PowerPoint's, create websites, know how to build a computer, understand computer and software terms, etc. Required for Grades 9-12.

2. A Required Automotive Course- I think that kids should know how to fix a car, jump start a car, and at least know how to diagnose a problem with a car. Required in Grade 11.

3. Constitutional Law be a Required Course- I think kids should know their Constitutional Rights and how it applies to them. I assume that most kids and adults know they have the right to remain silent, but how many of them know that you have to INVOKE your right to remain silent in order to remain silent?

4. Political Theory be a Required Course- I think kids should know how our government works and why we have a 2 party system. Not to mention help them understand how their opinion can change government (which is kind of lacking in toady's standard).

5. Gym takes up 2 periods instead of 1- Since obesity is a huge problem in the US, I think schools should make gym class take up 2 periods in hopes to combat growing obesity rate.

6. American History be taught before Global History- I think American History is important enough that it should be taught first compared to Global History.

7. Sciences become more Lab orientated- What I mean is that Science courses should be more "hands-on" which is kind of what Lab is. I think this will make Science more interesting for kids to learn and help kids understand how to Science applies in real-life.

8. Foreign Language for 4 years & have more options- I think that since we live in a global society that Foreign Language be required for 4 years so that kids understand the foreign language better. Also Foreign Languages should have more options besides Spanish or French. I know some schools have German as an option, but why not Chinese (frankly I think Chinese should be an easy option), Japanese, Italian, Russian, or Arabic?

I hope that clears up what I'm looking for. Anyways I hope you guys post some creative ideas as to how to improve the education in our schools from ONLY an education point of view (no blaming teachers...we all know that some of it is the teachers problem).

Honestly, I don't see much that can be improved to overall improve the education in my school. We are a generally high achieving. We have MSIP periods to get work done although, it does take some time away from other classes due to the fact that it's another whole class jammed into the day. I really do have mixed feelings about this but I do like the extra time to do work while we are actually in school. I have also heard that we do not offer some courses that people may need to get into a University or College program that they want to. If you need to take that course, you end up having to go to a different school. I think to make the education in our school rise, is to offer those courses in our school.

My school sucks. I would give my school a real 30 min recess. Then i would give my school a 30 min lunch (right now ours is 20 min).  Lastly i would kick out the ridiculous extra class (art)  that has swallowed our recess and most of our lunch. Oh ya and i'd kick out the stupid principal.

jaws123 : The question was "How would you improve your schools education?". I don't think longer recesses and longer lunches will help with the schools education.

MoblinGardens : It would too. Being cooped up with no fresh air can't help you learn nothing. You need a little fresh air during school even of it's just 30 min. And art is stupid and should be an elective, you should be able to decide if you want to use art in your future.

jaws123 : I'm not sure if you are saying that your school has no recess but if that's that case, students of your age, are generally still in Middle School, am I right? (I'm Canadian so we don't call it that). So kids do need outside activity to keep them focused throughout the day. I do agree with having recess. Here in Canada, or at least where I live, it is mandatory to have at least one art credit (Visual arts, Music, Drama, etc) or else you cannot graduate come grade 12. Anyways, if that's the case and you don't actually get recess in Middle School, then you probably should. I get what you are saying there.

okay, I agree with you on several points of the improvements that can be made on the school's education because as a nation we are ranked very low. In china, students have 10 hour school days and they attend on saturdays, that is why they are highly ranked in education. I am not by any means saying that we need to stack more hours on an already long enough school day, but I do think it is necessary to take advantage and improve upon the quality of material we are already being taught. Now as for courses to take, driver's ed is a 10th grade class and you can get your driver's permit in 10th grade as well. I strongly agree with taking more technologically related classes because we are living in a world where dependence on it is rapidly increasing and is best to become familiar with the technology of today. Now as for art or theater classes, I personally enjoy taking art because I am good at it, but I think it should stay an elective because it isn't technically required but I think you need to take a theater or fine arts class to get credits. Personal finance is 10th grade, and it is required so that is good. I think that if we as students recieve adequate sleep each night, then we will be more alert in class, and test results and performance will improve significantly. I also say that if we utilize the study hall periods to actual studying instead of wasting time messing around, then we can perhaps improve the quality of education we recieve at school.
