It is incredibly rare that I will ever play hacks, but the ones I do play are ones that will make drastic changes to the game, such as changing the mechanics to a more appropriate style. I like it when, on top of the above, all of the sprites and music have been redone.

When I play a hack I want it to have a different layout and maybe color scheme. If its a game like Pokémon I like to see stuff like different starters, different towns, different trainers and gym battles. Just as long as the game looks different from the original and plays slightly different its a good hack. I hope that helps.
