Nothing like good ol' Space Invaders. Released in the arcades in 1978, Space Invaders became one of the most popular and influential video games ever made. Once home game consoles started to pick up popularity, this game got ports everywhere. The most notable port is the Atari 2600 version which sold a lot of consoles just from that one game. The ill-fated Atari 5200 got an impressive port that was never really noticed. That's a shame, because this game is better then the 2600 port and even the arcade. This version has more depth, colors, better sound, and every thing needed to make an excellent console port.

Gameplay A: Despite its sensitive control (meant to be played with crappy analog joysticks) this port has some of the best gameplay in a game ever. The goal is simple, you shoot down every alien on the screen. These aliens are rewarding to destroy and whats even better, is that the aliens are different every couple of rounds. If you have played the 2600 version and loved its gameplay, just give this version a shot I bet you will enjoy it.

Graphics B+: Okay I'll admit this isn't exactly a "tech demo" like Pilotwings would be on SNES, or Pac-Man on this system, but hey it looks far better then the arcade. The aliens are multi-colored and mover very fluidly. Ataris attention to detail is great.

Sound C: Its hard to grade sound on an old Atari game because of the lack of music in most games. This game has some decent sound effects, but really nothing that show cases the special sound chip inplanted in the system.

Addictiveness A-: This game can get pretty addicting, not only is it good for high score, but playing it for endurance is fun too.

Depth B: No variations, but the aliens do change color and shape.

Difficulty medium: This game has a pretty balanced difficulty level.

OVERALL RATING A-

Tips:
1: Use the "shields" to your advantage, the aliens can shoot quite fast.
2: Be alert at all times, the aliens are quick and can kill you at any moment.
3: Kill the aliens in a certain order. Like row by row, or column, by column
4: The giant UFO gives you 60 additional points

For a long time I didn't get the fuss over this game, but after grabbing some atari roms, I began to understand. This game was from a different time in gaming history. It was one of the best 2600 games out there. And now that I know there's a 5200 port, I'll be sure to try it out. Maybe even next time I want some old atari action.

Good review by the way. Keep working on those new reviews, man. I always enjoy it when reviewers go into depth about the various categories (graphics, sound, etc). I'll have to check out your next review too.
