When you first play a game, you've 'bought' it and can play it for free as along as you 'own' it. It also gets added to your gaming profile so that you can easily access it and others can see what you are interested in playing.

Selling it means you get some of the Viz back that you paid for it.  It gets removed from your gaming profile and if you want to play it again you'd have to 'buy' it at full price again.
