OVERALL RATING: 7/10

One of the classics, this game is definitely worth the time if you enjoy puzzlers.  For those of you into more modern games, think about the dozen puzzlers in which you have to move blocks of ice into holes, or move colored boxes onto matching colored tiles.  Those dungeon ideas came from games like this.  They were so popular back in the 90's that several companies tried their hand at them, and this one just happens to be one of the originals.  It was a pretty popular arcade game, and for good reason!

GRAPHICS (4):
Since Boxyboy was one of the first in its kind, it should probably come as no surprise that the graphics aren't great.  Then again, there's not much to be displayed: the game consists of block in a room.  I adore this kind of logical game fortunately, or I -might- have turned away from this one simply because there are at least a dozen copies of this game (with the same exact puzzles) which are far more interesting to look at.  This one contains the exact same color scheme for all levels and does nothing flashy to appeal to less easily amused players.  The blocks are always the same color, the placement dots are always the same color, and the floor tiles and surrounding walls are... also always the same color.  Your character is very uninspired and comes off as an almost shapeless two-tone caricature.  It would have been nice if rooms had varying themes or, at the least, varying color palettes.

Occasionally there were short clips of Stevedore being paid by his boss, but they were short and uninteresting.  Stevedore pretty much lifts his hand to accept the payment and the game then continues.

SOUND (2):
This is probably the most annoying feature of the game.  The tune is catchy and adorable.... for the first two loops.  After you've heard it two times however, it's VERY irritating.  The sound clip is perhaps 20 seconds long, and it is the ONLY music in ALL 100 levels.  Even when the game does a short little clip of you character getting paid... you are subjected once more to that little uppity ditty.  This is most certainly a game to play muted.

ADDICTIVENESS (10):
I may be a bit partial, but these types of games have always been able to suck me in.  Even despite the horrible graphics and sound, I could still hardly tear myself away.  I really appreciated the fact that the game progresses in difficulty rather quickly so that you aren't bored with 20 easy levels.  I first got stuck on level 5 and had to try it about a dozen times before I finally figured it out.  After that level, most of them took me more than one try, and I still haven't made it through all 100 levels.  This game takes quite some time to get through due to its sheer number of levels and the challenge they present.  I personally love games that take a while to finish, which is another reason I would keep coming back to play this.

STORY (5):
Honestly, the story on this is poor and unimaginative.  However, I can't really fault the writers of the game.  I was impressed that they gave the game  plot at all, much less one that would give some sense as to why some guy spends all his time pushing boxes around.  They could have incorporated some goody story that gave a wacky tilt to the game, but they instead went with a cliché story young kids could understand and find appealing.  Who wouldn't want to help the hard and honest worker win a girl back by laboring for enough cash to buy a hot rod?

DEPTH (5):
There's no depth to the plot, and honestly there's not much depth to the game play either.  There is only one type of box and there is only one type of character with one type of action.  However, I gave this a rating of 5 due to the fact that there are 100 levels.  Also, since the levels do offer challenge, the game takes a long time to beat.

DIFFICULTY (7)
The first few levels are simple, but the writers of the game didn't take time getting the ball rolling.  The rooms get larger, the boxes become more numerous, and more walls serve as obstacles as you make your way through the stages.  Luckily, the game has an 'undo' feature so that you can go back as many moves as you need to.  This is especially useful if you accidentally push a box you never meant to.  Also, you can re-set a level as many times as you want with no sort of consequence.

If you use the main menu, you can get a camera shot of the whole map as well, so you can more easily strategize.

While a few of the levels have a couple of possible solutions, most only have one.  This is important to note because you must move the correct boxes into the correct order, and fill in the yellow placements also in the right order.  If you start at the wrong end of a line of dots, for example, you could move every box into place before realizing that the last block cannot be possibly put into the right location.  This can sometimes get frustrating, but unlike most game frustrations, it only inspired me to try and try again.

Overall, I gave this game a rating of 7 out of 10.  It's a great classic that I love to pieces, so it's easy to overlook the areas in which the game lacks.  The original developers must have agreed with me, judging the number of knock- offs that stemmed from this game.  I'd place this arcade game up there with Arkanoid and Galaga.  However, if you're looking for something that will appeal to your sense of sight, I'd try one of its clones, such as "Shove it!" or "The Warehouse Game".  They have the exact same puzzles, but are more colorful and also a bit lengthier since some clones have 160 levels.

Looks like a good game, but is one of those strategy puzzle games, like mazes.

Another great review, I have to say. Shows alot of in-depth stuff and I get amazed by reviews like that. I am surprised you can easily do 1000+ words, but I can only max around 850 with the instructions part in my reviews. Keep up the great work.
