There is really only one way to sum up what Earthworm Jim is, and that is GROOVY! I own this game for the Sega Genesis, and it quite a kick butt game. Pretty much Earthworm Jim in a nutshell, you must run through each level like your stereotypical platformer game and defeat each one of Jim's enemies. Sounds simple enough, right? Wrong, this game is a real challenge for players. I remember that I had a difficult time with even the first level. You are never really given any clues, at least not that I remember anyway on how to defeat most of the bosses and there is something constantly coming after you. But all in all, it is a fantastic game. One that I love and will always play for as long as my Sega Genesis is still operational.
Once you start the game you will soon see why I rated this game a solid 10. It is a true classic in my book, the game was soon after derived into a tv show and had many other sequel games which didn't do so well compared to the original game (especially Menace 2 the Galaxy). As you play through you will encounter some pretty strange places, um like a hell level? Yeah, and it comes fairly early in the game too. Also some pretty out there bosses to face as well, such as Psy-Crow, Evil the Cat and my personal favorite (and before you ask, yes this is all one name compared to the booklet that came with the game) The Evil Queen Pulsation, Bloated, Festering, Sweaty, Pus-filled, Malformed, Slug for Butt.
Everything about this game was weird, even Jim's character was weird shouting things during the levels like "Yippie" or "Groovy!" But everyone that I know who has played the game loved it. And that is including myself. I must say too that for Sega Genesis the graphics on this game were actually really good, that is why I rated the graphics an 8. Everything was colorful where it needed to be and in some cases dim where it needed to be. You could tell what a lot of things are, and what they are suppose to be. As for the sounds I loved the music the game had and the noises that the enemies and Jim made. So I rated the sound a 7.
The addictiveness of this game was very easy to rate, 9. Everyone that I have seen play this game will not put it down. Even if they are constantly losing and have to start from the beginning over and over again. It is a fun game, and very entertaining and enjoyable. In fact the only flaw I had with the game was the fact that you couldn't save, but I suppose you could only do so much with the Sega Genesis back then. Looking past this little flaw is very easy to do once you really get into the game, besides you can't save some Sonic games and those are still great.
As for depth I rated a 7, it is a pretty long game and there are items you will want to collect if you come across them such as Plasma Power, Mega Plasma, Suit Power, Super Suit Power, Asteroid Shields, Atomic Accelerator, Fuel Pods and of course Extra Life. Each of these items will prove to be very useful as you proceed through the game, especially the Mega Plasma try not to waste it. As for the difficulty, I rated this game an 8 when it came to how hard it was. Hardcore gamers if you are looking for a real challenge I highly recommend Earthworm Jim, the first level is hard the whole game is hard. It is fun, but it is easy to find yourself getting really mad with Jim because of constant losing.
Overall Earthworm Jim is an amazing and fantastically hard game, that can be a blast for all kinds of gamers. Any time someone asks me what got me into gaming or to name one of my favorite games this game always comes out of my mouth. I loved it, and my family and friends loved it too. Every once and a while I will see myself playing it or one of my family members. I think that it is a game that someone can really appreciate no matter how old it gets.
