So I am rather shocked that no one has made a thread about this yet. The first man to set foot on the moon just died. Furthermore, the only news articles I can find are on reactions to his death... quotes from celebrities and officials. They are all very nice and all... but really?
Personally, I am sad because I think Neil Armstrong was not only an American hero, but a hero for all of humanity. He did what so many of us have only dreamed of doing... he went to space, and he set foot on another world. Sure it was only a satellite of our own planet, but it was still extraterrestrial soil that he left his tracks on. We haven't been back since 1972... that is 40 years!! We haven't gone to Mars or done much of anything. Curiosity and the other Mars landers are impressive bits of science, to be sure... but it's not the same as having real, living people on another world.
A living legend has died. We should all pay attention to this... put down the game controllers, stop bickering over politics or religion or pokemon... go out and look at the moon. Really look at it and remember that we have been there and that we can go there again, or to Mars, or to anywhere else if we work hard enough and work together. Because that, ladies and gentlemen, is Neil Armstrong's legacy.
"For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink." - the Armstrong family, in a written statement announcing his death.
