You might be wondering what an "Anti-Blasphemy" resolution is. Well, it sounds like it is an attempt to get governments around the world to make it a crime to criticize, question, insult, investigate, etc every religion. Now, on the surface this sounds pretty good right? It sounds like religious persecution is going to go away. Or at least there is a venue to persue some sort of recourse for it.

This isn't what I imagined when I saw this. Instead I see yet another avenue for Mulisms and extreme Islamic groups to silence all criticism of Islam.

What do other people think of this?

well, from what I know there has already been a non-binding resolution of this passed by the UN but a coalition of Islamic (and some non-islamic) states are pushing to make it binding. Basically it is an attempt to force countries to come up with laws within our own judicial systems that will comply with the anti-blasphemy resolution.

I think it is total BS and that even if it passes that Western democracies should oppose it as much as possible.

See, you'd like to think that is true... but "the West" seems to cave over and over and over to the demands of Islam. We've become afraid to offend or fight back against them.

I'm not sure if this sort of resolution is veto-able by the US. I really hope it is because I really don't want something like this becoming international law. It'll only make it harder to fight extremist religious groups (in all their forms).

Funny how this more or less goes against the UN's own Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Originally posted by The United Nations

Article 18

Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion.

Article 19

Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

A law such as this is simply unconstitutional in the United States and unreasonable in many ways.

I'm all for respecting other religions, however this has gone to far. I think there really is nothing on this Earth that is beyond some sort of reasonable criticism. To deny such is ignorance.

that's a very interesting find. I didn't even think to go check if it violated any pre-existing UN resolutions, etc.

This resolution goes against the spirit and letter of most western democracies.

I'm actually curious to find out how many of the countries that are pushing for this are actually considered to be democratic. That might help explain why they think it's okay to limit free speech.

So then they shouldn't be able to pass it anyway, at least I hope so. geo being right again, it does go against democratic principles. It limits freedom of speech

Yeah, I doubt that a single democracy is in favor of this. It will stifle free speech. It violates many constitutions. All this bill does is allow punishments for those critical not even intolerant of certain religions

Uhhhh.... this seems freakin' scary as hell.

Trying to pass a law such as what is suggested by this, is not only heinous in concept, but wholly unconstitutional! What happened to freedom of speech?! Making something that could give a government that much power defeats anything we could possible refer to as a democracy. Anti-Blasphemy Resolution... ludicrous.

I agree that it sounds like a bad idea, but I can understand why they are trying to get it passed. It is just a continuing struggle in the racial/religious prejudicing that has existed since the rise of Islam in the 7th century. Each group disagrees with another group and all try to gain the upper hand, that goes for the different factions of Islam (Shi'ite and Sunni), the different factions of Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, etc.

I doubt that it will be signed by many nations. And it would be bad for anyone, not just non-Muslims. Honestly, can you imagine what problems would be started within differing Christian factions alone?

well, the problem is why they're trying to pass it. It will be a justification for harsh punishments, namely murder, for anyone who speaks out in a Muslim country

this is a very bad idea, plus i think it singles out those that dont believe anything.
if this gets in they cant even speak about why they dont beleive or maybe even the fact that they dont, but anyone can speak against them.

It singles out everyone. If anyone disagrees with anyone else over religion and the person they disagree with is in a position of power, they can be brought up on charges. It is the proverbial Burning Times + the Spanish Inquisition on crack.

well, I did read up a little more on this and I remember hearing it got passed. However, the resolution was passed among some sub-commitee or something that doesn't have any real authority over the entire UN. The resolution would have to pass among the General Assembly, which the US is a member and has Veto power. So the likelihood that this is enforceable in any way is slim.

However, this doesn't mean that laws that relate to this won't be passed in some of the countries that are a part of the sub-commitee. Although I guess in many muslim dominated countries it unofficially is that way already.

That will not pass in the u.s. It would go against our freedom of speech. To think they would actually try to make such a law. Everyone should have the right to say their piece about everything. Wheather it is true or stupid is up to each person to decide. Not for the u.n., a body halfway across the planet. I truly beleive that it is an attack on our rights and should be fought every step of the way.
That is my opinion whether anyone agrees or not is up to him or her to decide.

halfway across the planet?.... the UN headquarters is inside the US.... I personally think they should burn that building down and make the UN meet somewhere else. The UN is just another corrupt place for world leaders to meet and decide the fate of everyone else.
