Sonic the Hedgehog, was released on June 23, 1991 for the Sega Genesis/ Mega Drive. The game has sold 15 million copies making it the best selling Genesis game, and Sonic game. Let's take a look through this awesome game.
The story isn't big, but it's better than some of the new Sonic games. It all starts on South Island, a peaceful island that is home to many happy animals. One day, Dr. Ivo, Robotnik. Invades South Island and traps the innocent animals into robots. That's not the only thing he's doing, he is also searching for the chaos emeralds which are powerful gems. Only one cool dude can stop this demented scientist (as so said in the manual) his name is Sonic the Hedgehog. A fast blue hedgehog with an attitude. So your goal is to defeat Robotnik, retrieve the chaos emeralds, and return peace on the island.
The graphics are great, the parallax scrolling for the backgrounds creates a more realistic and defined background. The sprites look smooth and not too pix-elated, and the colors are vibrant. If I compared this game to Sonic 2 or 3. Sonic 2 and 3 would look better, but for a title released in 1991, it looks great. So I will give the graphics a 9.
The sound is great too. Music that sounds good and doesn't annoy you till you go crazy. Sound effects that are tuned, just right. The Game Gear and Master System version have EXTREMELY high pitched sound effects. All this good sound comes from a Yamaha YM2612 sound chip. (Sound rating 8).
Sonic the Hedgehog is very addicting. I played it all summer, even when I got all the chaos emeralds and beat the game. That just shows how addicting it is. (Addictiveness 9).
The game, really doesn't have much to offer. 6 zones with 3 acts, plus the final stage, there is also the rotating special stages nothing else really. ( Depth rating 6).
Sonic 1 isn't very hard, maybe the first couple of times you play. After that you'll start to beat the levels quickly and easily. (Difficulty rating 6)
Overall 9.2
