I've tried about a hundred freaking times to defragment my computer. However, all those times, during the defragmentation, all the software types I try somehow hit a digital nerve that causes my computer to completely freeze and become unusable. What is going on? I get a good fraction through the defragmentation and then everything just locks up and goes straight to hell.

It's starting to annoy me to no end, and I really need to fully defrag, but it won't let me I feel so helpless and technotarded right now!

If it freezes with jkdefrag too then your hard drive sucks and you should run a scan disk on it.

THAT sounds like my cue! :3

It's not that my hard drive sucks... I found the source of the horribleness. It turns out while I was browsing the web, GameVance decided to install itself on my computer without my consent, so it decided to attach to my System32 files... Wonderful. I'm scanning right now and it should be fixed soon.

Dont use your computer while degragging. Defrag over night.

Analyse the disk, does it need defraging?

Use proper defrag software, windefrag defrags alright, but it dosnt think ahead. Other defrag software (I use diskkeeper 2008) positions most used files together (eg system files) so the computer will run faster as a whole after the defrag. I also set it to defrag once a week, over night.

There's infinite defragging programs.
I myself use Auslogics Disk Defrag. Ups my CPU speed by about 14% after every week of defragging.
Quite a nice program.
I also use CCleaner to get rid of all the nasty Junk Files, Reg Fixes, and as a substitute Uninstall Utility.

EDIT: Also, this isn't really "knowing" computers, it's just standard maintenance. Should always be done.
I also suggest to do a weekly or monthly chkdsk scan, usually unclogs some problems.
