Everyone has their own definition of "classic" movie. My definition is one made before 1980, since I was born in '92. However, those who were born later or earlier may have a different idea of "classic." My favorite movie made before 1980 is, coincidentally enough, my absolute favorite movie: Citizen Kane, made in 1941.

What about you guys? What is your favorite "classic" movie, and what year was it made in?

(I don't think movies made in the 90s are considered classics yet, so let's avoid those.)

(Feel free to close this if it is a repeat. I didn't see another one like this anywhere, but you never know.)

Yeah, I agree. My definition of a "Classic Movie" would be one that is mostly original (as just about nothing is all that original nowadays) that I enjoy and will forever love that movie. A movie where I would have no problem watching it 8 years later.

My favourite old movie has got to be the Dracula films made by Hammer Horror starring Christopher Lee & Peter Cushing. I think there were 6 of them. I know the first one was made in 1958, but I think the last one was made in 1974.

My favourite classic movies are Gone With the Wind ( 1939 ), Hush...Hush Sweet Charlotte (1964), To Each His Own (1946) and The Heiress ( 1949).
All of them star the immensely talented Olivia de Havilland, who is one of my favourite actresses. Other than GWTW, which I own, I don't get to watch the other's very often as I've never seen them on DVD and aren't on TV too much.

my list is boring. A few are noirish too...

Cat People

King Kong (and Son of Kong)

Treasure of Sierra Madre

Bride of Frankenstein (I find the original to be a bit to "stagy"... Dracula too. I also prefer The Creature from the Black Lagoon over The Wolf Man.)

It's a Wonderful Life

Casablanca

Tarzan, the Ape Man (and the two that followed... before Boy.)

The Adventures of Robin Hood

Crime Without Passion

Bad Day at Black Rock

This is off the top of my head... I'm sure there's some glaring omissions (all of Hitchcock, westerns especially)

My favorite is Nosferatu. Now if you do not know what it is. Nosferatu is a 1922 horror film which is the first Dracula movie. It may be a bit short but for 1922 everything was new and amazing. But otherwise any Hammer film has got me!

Arsenic and Old Lace. Watching those two sweet, kind, cute old ladies talking so casually about murdering people and burying them in the basement...Teddy Roosevelt trumpeting up the stairs...that creepy son...and that poor normal guy desperately waffling between protecting his beloved aunts and having them committed...great old movie.

I love most older movies but i'd have to say my favorite classic film will have to be A night at the Opera. It's one of the many Marx Brothers movies.

I would probably have to say either Citizen Kane or A Hard Day's Night. Citizen Kane needs no explanation. A Hard Day's Night has a fantastic soundtrack, and is filled to the brim with good humor. Plus it stars The Beatles. What more could one ask for?
