This is pretty ridiculous.
If we were talking about missiles or weapons then they may have had a point but the idea is to deploy "anti" missile shields in eastern and central europe.
The russian protests are stupid, and its really none of there buissiness.
If they wanted to put up defenses in there borders and we objected i can guess what they would say.
They are claiming this would undermine there "nuclear deterent".
Where in any nations law does it say, we must leave ourself open to attack to make our neighbours feel powerfull and significant.

Tbh, the threat of pre-emptive strikes is ridiculous, if they attack any nation in europe then the other 26 european UNION nations are obligated to back up the defenders, that totals more tanks, more guns, more soldiers, more aircraft, more ships, more aircraft carriers and a massive missile arsenal, against them.  The uk alone, despite having a population about 2.5 times smaller, has a larger economy, with a purchasing power double that of russias by head of population and 3 times that in nominal produce(essentially, a lot more money by population amount).
I think russia is really trying to assert itself here, they seem to be ignorant of the fact no one cares, they cant just bully nations anymore.

Nations trying to assert themself is stupid, no nation is dominant for ever, Rome was dominant, greece was dominant, persia was dominant, mongolia was dominant, turkey was dominant, france was dominant,  the united kingdom was dominant, currently the usa is dominant, soon china will be, then who knows, india and brazil are potentials.

Its all futile, time is better spent advancing technologicallly, socially and scientifically, not blowing each others heads off over who owns what pieces of dirt like half evolved monkeys.

This really irritated me. I would go a little farther and say we should be able to put missiles in other countries. This is simply missile shields. I think Russia simply doesn't like that we wish to put up defenses. The US or any free nation do not generally just attack nations, so I would say the Russians are simply wining.

They should call this World War III.

I think at the heart of the issue is that Russia feels excluded and untrusted again. The shield is supposed to protect from nukes from Iran and N. Korea... but only protects Europe, leaving Russia out in the cold to fend for itself. That seems a crappy thing to do, so they think "what if it's because they think we will nuke them? Seriously? Twenty years and still they don't trust us?"

... and so they react like children.

Also, you are putting missile bases in former Soviet-controlled countries that still have hostile feelings towards Russia... that would make me nervous if I was them.

Elara : I agree, I think that the Russians are just being little babies. Of course we trust them after 20 years, even though they are not "Best Friends" with us, they are still okay with us. I don't even think we are really worried about an attack, or should be. I think that out of this, nothing will really happen, but if the Russians want to cry, let them. And Pro_Master: if the war did happen, they would call it WW3, probably. But it shouldn't happen. Also Elara, I bet that Russia IS a bit nervous about the missile bases, but no need for war.

What worries me is that all this sabre rattling just reminds of of the nationalism that set off the first world war. The alliances, the posturing...  it's all making me very nervous.

Elara : well its actualy the usa thats placing them (in response to the you part) and the russians did specificaly complain it undermined there nuclear deterent.
As it happens russia has been using the stolen city they renamed kalingrad to place missiles for some time.
Well i still dont trust them, the reason being is they are not a democratic state. They focus on military, they rig votes, they have mp's with race hate crime offences and they treat the working class like sh**.
I would be happy for them to have missile shields, but making threats against other peoples, ridiculous.
Wars are inevitable, but they are not beneficial.
North america and europe have increased scientific advancment many times over in the last 50 years,if the 4underdevolped ones were at the same level the potential is unimaginable.
Or we could kill each other over our beliefs, colour or geographic position of birth.
Yeh, the later is more likely.

thenumberone : Don't get me wrong, Russia has more than it's share of problems. But it is good to look at both sides of the coin.

Kaliningrad is an interesting point, but the whole city is interesting to me so there ya go.

And I know it's the USA placing them... I remember when Bush proposed the stupid plan years ago. Honestly, I thought it had been done already since they all just stopped talking about it. I mean, I get the idea of protecting from the two psycho countries with nukes... but all this uncompromising stupidity... ugh!

Elara : when obama gained power he scrapped it for shorter range interception to appease russia, its only now russia has rejected this too.

the first stage of the shield is up and russia responded by testing a new missile they claim will be able to breach it...
