I'm curious: does anyone else here like to walk around barefoot? And I don't mean just inside your home. I started walking around my school campus barefoot early last October (2010). Though I did enjoy walking around without shoes, it was more convenience and laziness than anything else. However, I quickly became totally used to it and it was very comfortable. I love the feeling of my feet touching the ground, and as almost any young child can tell you, running barefoot on grass is just fantastic. Of course I got the questions about why I was doing it, and didn't it hurt, and the ever present stare, but I didn't mind it. After a while it just became normal for me. All I needed to do was remember to carry flip flops in my backpack for the cafeteria and bathrooms. And because I am not bothered by cold very much (I wear shorts and a t-shirt year round), it was fairly simple for me to keep it going for the rest of the semester. When I went home for winter break I only wore sandals whenever possible, and when I came back to school it was right back to nothing. I can count the number of times I have worn real shoes in the past year on my fingers. For Christmas, I received a pair of Vibram Five Fingers (essentially gloves for your feet), and they are amazing. I wear them whenever I need footwear, unless it's easier to wear sandals. Recently I have discovered that it's not actually against any state law to walk barefoot in stores or restaurants, nor is there any health code in existence that forbids a customer from being barefoot in these establishments. There may be a county/city ordinance or regulation, but those are few and far between. Knowing this, I believe that I may start to wear shoes even less in the near future. My question is this: Do you like to be barefoot? If yes, when did you start? What do you like about it, and where do you do it? If you didn't know about the lack of prohibiting laws, will this change your habits? If no, why not? Please, no anger, I'm just curious to know why. If you think you have a reason (not your personal reason, a public concern) that walking barefoot is bad, I bet I can debunk it. I love walking barefoot. I've always wanted some Vibrams, personally.
Ever since a young age my family has owned a pool. During the summer we go barefoot all the time, since we are often wearing little clothing or a swimsuit due to the heat. I agree that it's just easier not to put shoes on, plus the ground is warm enough for it to be comfortable. Where I live, it gets very cold and wet most of the year, so unfortunately going barefoot is only possible for about 3 or 2 months. Otherwise my feet would be numb from the cold. Once I went barefoot in the downtown area of a pretty large city. I wouldn't normally do that, but I was supposed to be doing a nude body paint protest, so shoes weren't part of my wardrobe that day. I was walking around in an open public space on concrete and sidewalks. The next day I had an infection under and around my nailbed on one of my toes. I had sort of a hangnail on that toe. It got to be so serious that was only fixed by surgery. The exceptions for me would be a city or public washroom. Ever since a young age my family has owned a pool. I do from time to time. I don't walk too far though. I did walk all around my campsite barefoot last summer. I didn't feel like putting on my shoes just to go to the consession stand and its not that far from where I was located, so I just went outside. I even walk outside in my home, but only around my block and by front or back yard. Usually when my brother is or my Dad is. |

I've never been a big fan of walking around barefoot in places other than my own home, or somewhere I am familiar with. There's just too much nasty stuff on the ground...and I'm not a germaphobe or anything like that.
I do know people who have done this though and they always seemed to have really dirty feet. Dirty feet is not a good look for anyone, but that's just me. Plus, feet aren't the most attractive thing on most human beings. I give you credit for liberating yourself from purchasing expensive shoes, It's just not for me. Also keep in mind that although there aren't always laws forbidding being barefoot, any business owner can kick you out for not wearing shoes at their discretion. Just like they can refuse service to anyone for any reason. Plus customers at restaurants and things like that might complain although you stated that you usually wear shoes while eating. Well, I like to walk bare foot, yes. Especially in my back yard. But, in public, not really. Unless it is on the beach... then that is cool too. Interesting thread... just not a lot you can post about. tee hee. |

I never walk barefoot, mainly since my driveway has alot of rocks, so I don't walk barefoot.
Being barefoot outside means your feet can get easily dirty, but make sure the sidewalks aren't painted black, because black painted sidewalks on a hot day can burn your feet (no kidding), and it'll hurt big time. I don't like being barefoot outside, not fun for me at all, but no one would like being barefoot unless they really want to be barefoot outside. I rarely walk anywhere in my bare feet, even in the house. If it is not one reason that makes me dislike it, it's another. Usually, I am not barefoot because the floor never seems clean --in my opinion. Also, I have had several bad experiences walking barefoot. I have been stung on my right foot by bees on two separate occasions. I stepped on a needle-thin nail, with my right foot, AT MARTIAL ARTS. I also stepped on the tiniest shard of glass after I vacuumed the floor --I think it was my right foot again. None of this helps the fact that I am more sensitive to touch (including pain). |

I tend to walk barefoot in my house and in the patio, just because I like to have my feet freer rather than cramped inside shoes all day. I do think that smell originates from having socks and shoes on most of the day. During the summertime, I rarely wear shoes and my feet do not have any odor whatsoever.
I don't like to be barefoot anywhere outside just because of all the things that can be stepped on scattered throughout the ground. It does feel good to walk like that though, I admit. I just about never walk around barefoot. Personally, I don't like to walk around barefoot. It harms my feet, and makes me feel kind of awkward. |

AuraBlaze : I've never really worried about stepping on a lot of things. I'm able to avoid most things, plus I have some pretty good calluses now. If you build up tolerance, your feet will become less sensitive to pain, but still sensitive to other feelings. Also, shoes won't always help you with sharp objects. I once skewered my foot through my shoe on a rusty nail.
septembern : You're right about the lack of odor. The reason feet smell is because they are enclosed in a tight space for long periods of time, and they sweat. The warm environment causes the sweat to begin smelling quite bad, and after a while your shoes will just reek all the time. Even sandals, if you wear them long enough, will start to smell. When you are barefoot, your feet don't get as hot, and when they do the sweat just evaporates. septembern : You're right about the lack of odor. Quite the opposite in my case. In addition to the two nails I stepped on at Martial Arts, there was one nail I stepped on that my shoe protected me from. I felt an unusual lump under one of my feet and looked at it to find a fat nail had broken through the rubber bottom of my shoe, but not far enough to reach my foot --a rather close call. |

Dude I love wearing no shoes too, but seriously, at school... No. That's not allowed at my school. Or is it? :o. Anyway my mom still doesn't like me out side barefoot, but she allows it. |

Do you like to be barefoot?
Actually, yes I do. Being barefoot is one of my favorite ways to walk. If yes, when did you start? I started in high school. It's good for your calves, and builds a good muscle base with less actual work. What do you like about it, and where do you do it? Like I said above, it builds muscle quicker, without noticable work being done. If you didn't know about the lack of prohibiting laws, will this change your habits? What... there's rules against it? Klutch : Well, I'm in college. If you're in high school it might be frowned upon, but college is more public, and has fewer restrictions.
legacyme3 : My point is that there are no laws requiring shoes. When businesses cite health codes for footwear requirements, they are blowing smoke. No such code exists. There's a very interesting page on the barefooters website that explains it in detail. There may be city ordinances requiring shoes in certain places, but unless it is written in the store policy (which would be a stupid waste of time), the only thing that requires you to wear shoes is an OSHA regulation for employees working in hazardous areas. legacyme3 : My point is that there are no laws requiring shoes.
