<*br /> is the code version of pressing Enter. I noticed when you use the new post editor that those have a tendency to appear when you try to edit a post.

That alone annoyed me enough that I just switched to the Old Post Editor. There is a link to do that next to the "Preview reply" button below the post box when replying to a thread.
