Random quote from this guy:

Herman Melville (1819–1891), U.S. author. Babbalanja, in Mardi: and a Voyage Thither, ch. 155 (1849)

What do you think this quote means, mind over matter, or something else?
Lol, yeah, just a confusing statement for me.

It makes sense i suppose, In hindsight to me it would make sense if it was the other way round, I class your soul as you general personality etc. Whilst your body is  the physical part. Personality means more than looks etc

I have probably read this completely wrong lmao

icrazyforpokemon :

Welp yeah, that'd be the obvious meaning of it, but I was wondering if there could be a deeper meaning behind it. I kinda like to analyze stuff too much <.<

The statement is that our bodies are what is in control, not our souls.... so actually what icrazy said is the opposite of what Melville meant because that would be the body belonging to the soul.

Also, how could you leave out Moby-Dick when it is Melville's most famous work?

Elara :

Ok, yeah now that makes sense =)

I kinda like to think that our soul is what is in control, but our body often overrules.

Moby-Dick is too controversial. lol.

tRIUNE : How so? I've never heard it called controversial, in fact it's considered one of the great American novels.

Elara :

Well for me it is anyway. I know that it's considered one of the greatest, but for me it's controversial in that, because the writer was willing to address all forms of sexuality, even the homoerotic, I know that in Moby-Dick there is male bonding from what is termed the "marriage bed" episode involving Ishmael and Queequeg, and the "Squeeze of the Hand" chapter describing the camaraderie of sailors extracting spermaceti from a dead whale. Other than that it's good literature. I was just trying to be funny about leaving the book out of my post anyway. lol.

Ah. Well humor is all well and good. I think Melville had guts to address that particular reality of sailor's lives in the 19th century (I mean, it's not like it didn't happen).
