Super Mario 64 is the first plat former of the Mario series in 3D. The main goal of the game is of course rescue Princess Toadstool from Bowser, but in oder to reach him this time however. You must collect the golden stars Bowers stole from the kingdom. The kingdom itself is a very large area that leads to many different rooms and each room contains a magical portrait that leads you to a world to begin your adventure to start off the game.
One of the first level leads you to a land ran by King Bomb Omb. You are there to help the pink Bomb omb to over throw the King on top of the hill where you must circle around the large Bomb Omb and sweep him off his feet. The only way to damage the King his by throwing him back onto the ground. However, he sustains no damage if you throw him off the cliff. He will merely jump back up and you will have to circle him again to grab him. After three successful toss. The King will admit defeat by giving you a golden star. Once you have completed the first task. You can go back in the same world to obtain the other Golden Stars that are locked away. One of the most annoying star to get while in the first world is trying to bump down the pole that is holding the Chain Chomp. You have to time it just right in oder to nail down the pole 3 times or the Chain Chomp will be at your rear knocking you off and you'll have to start again. It's not too difficult. It's mainly about timing the jump. Another thing that is different in Super Mario 64. There are some worlds where there are strong gust of winds in the level. It's not a big problem, but if you are caught in one of these whirlwinds. Mario's hat is blown off his head and you have to retrieve it, but if you where to die without your hat. One of the enemies in the world can be found wearing Mario's hat. Graphics: 8 The graphics for this game is one of the best during it's time on the systems. However, there are some glitches here and there that randomly pops up during the game leaving you confused. The camera can be quite annoying sometimes due to the fact you can't move it to adjust your point of view of the platform you are on. Sound: 9 The sound is great. There are some catchy tunes in some worlds, while in other is very smooth and soothing. Not much can be said about the sounds. It's not extraordinary, nor dull either. Difficulty 6 The game is not very hard to master. It's quite easy to beat, but there are some areas that can be a pain as well as the enemies. It's more about the timing to achieve what you are after. It can be annoying sometimes when you are trying to get a Golden Star, but only have the wind blowing you away each time you reach it or an enemy giving you a hard time. Addictiveness: 8 Super Mario 64 is a enjoyable game that offers you more challenges and new areas to explore. Once you gotten the main stars you need. You can go back into a previous world to attain more in areas you couldn't go into before. It offers different power ups, such as the flying cap to soar through the are, The transparent cap that allows you to move through fences and the Mecha Mario cap that allows you to plow through enemies with ease. There are no dull moments in the game. Story: 7 The story is old news. It's your typical plumber out to rescue the princess from the mutated turtle Bowser. Not much had changed from the years except the game is in a 3D environment, but this time Bowser had stolen the Golden Stars from the Mushroom Kingdom in attempt to gain power and rule the kingdom and it's Mario's job to rescue Princess Toadstool and put a stop to Bowser's evil deeds. Depth: 8 There is one thing that can be said about Super Mario 64. Instead of the old fashion plat form jumping to reach the end of the level. You have more freedom to explore the world within the portraits inside the Mushroom Kingdoms. You can talk to friendly pink Bomb Ombs and race with a Koopa Trooper. You can still collect the coins, but with the added 8 red coins to earn a Golden Star of that world you are in. You are able to unlock new caps for Mario to use such as the flying cap to, Mecha Mario and the Transparent Cap. One of the first level leads you to a land ran by King Bomb Omb.
