Personally, I think touch screen phones are the best and easiest to use, simply touch whatever it is you're doing (phone call, text, etc.) The only flaw touch screen phones have is, it's expensive and breaks easily, so if you have one take good care of it.

I currently have the Iphone, a music player/phone/mini computer.

I've never used a smart phone for an extended period of time.

However I think anything running Android is the best, Iphones tend to have short battery life and somewhat shoddy connection.

Personally I'm kinda old fashioned and I like a full keyboard with buttons that actually click. I don't know what it is, I can just type way faster that way, and I can if I try to type using the touch screen keyboard on my phone. Thankfully I have the option of doing both on my phone.

I voted slide.

To be honest... I've gotta go with flip phones, like the MOTO RAZR--The old style RAZR, anyway. I currently have a 'slab' type phone and I hate it. Touch controls just aren't very good. I have to slow my typing speed way down because there's no tactile feedback and--especially since my phone doesn't have multi-touch, I always end up typing too fast and skipping characters. I miss good old buttons. Though if I could get a flip up Android phone that had a keypad, then we'd be in business, because not only would my screen be protected, I'd have a number pad for instantly putting numbers in my phone (No more, Power on, tap contacts, tap new, type number, type name, tap save. Just 867-5309 save), and still have a big pretty screen for watching videos. Also I'm a pretty fast typist with T9... I sort of wonder if I can get a T9 plugin for my computer and just type with the number pad.

I've only had a few cell phones myself, but the one I have now I feel is the best one I've ever had. I have a Motorola KRZR K1 series. And the best part was it was a gift, so I didn't have to fork out the money for it.

Before upgrading, my previous two cell phones were flip types. Always with full keyboards.
I can't text on a numeric pad to save my life, yet I text a lot. So long as I have a full keyboard and the option to disable auto-correct things, I'm good.

Hence why I looked around like heck before I upgraded to a smart phone.
What I finally decided on was the LG-C555.

And I've been in love ever since.
The physical keyboard is great to type on, once I got used to where all the functions are, it has a nice loud speaker for music, normal size headphone port, excellent 3G for browsing (it actually loads Vizzed amazingly), and there's some Android apps that I just can't go without now. (Hellloooo Pathfinder RD)

The only problem I kinda have with this phone is the relatively small screen and that it's a slide. I can see the reason for the slide, and it works, but I've always preferred the flip types. They've just seemed more durable.
Ah well. It works wonderfully, and I couldn't replace it.

I've got the iPhone 4s. I got it on Christmas and I think it works really well. It's only my 2nd phone so I can't really say for sure how well it works in comparison to others but I think it's relatively easy to use.

A smartphone with a touch keyboard. You really don't need hard buttons to interact. They aren't that practical any longer. I will admit I got to a point that I could text ridiculously fast with just the t9 with the number pad, but I can text just as fast now on any of my touch keyboards.

If you want an answer that fits your parameters mentioned then I would say a phone with a full keyboard that you can flip out or up or whatever you direction you may be flipping it - like the ENV. Its a smart comfortable design and doesn't waste space that could be used for more efficient hardware by having it slide out.
