If Avast is running anti-spyware there's no point to install defender as all it does is protect you from spyware.

Microsoft's anti-virus is here: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/default.aspx?mkt=en-us#dlbutton

Though you shouldn't run two anti-viruses at once as they won't like each other. Two anti-viruses don't play nicely with each other.

He speaks the truth. I ran into the same predicament last year. Avast and Defender kept mistaking the other for a virus and I kept getting notified every two seconds. Just pick one.

NotJon : Yeah that's generally what will happen.

Though keep in mind like I said Defender is anit-spyware not anti-virus, while both will think the other is bad Defender won't protect you from viruses so crashhat69 if you wanted a full anti-virus and don't want to deal with having to relicense avast, you should get: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/default.aspx?mkt=en-us#dlbutton

Disconnect from the internet, uninstall Avast, restart if necessary and then install MS Security Essentials. I haven't used it myself, but I've heard it's solid.

Edit: Screwed up the summon but oh well.

I say keep Avast and don't get Defender. Defender is just anti-spyware and not that great of a program in the first place. Just use Avast.
