The other day at school someone said they had swam in the ocean at the Gulf of Mexico. Then my friend said that he had technically not swam in the ocean. I said that he had because the Gulf is still part of the Atlantic Ocean. One of our teachers said my friend was correct and he rubbed it in my face. Later I found sites that said I was correct and gave him links to the sites but he got pissed because I wouldn't say I was wrong. I wanted to know if anyone that studies oceans knows if I was correct or my friend.

Your friend is correct. They area connected as are all oceans but if you think about it so are continents and countries would the same thing apply then ?

You were both in the wrong. To him, you looked like a butthurt little punk trying to prove a point by providing links, then he acted butthurt little punk. You both need to stop worrying if the Gulf is part of the Ocean. will it matter in 20 years? No.

this sort of reminds me of Youtube and people (there) trying to kill each other because of arguments about CoD or the number of dislikers (____ should die for clicking dislike button), etc.

Not saying you are one of those people as this is not as bad as some arguments I have seen.

Also, what is so special about swimming in the gulf of Mexico (even though it has been "oli'd "), that is the kid's problem, even though by the looks of the post you are trying to say he did not swim in the ocean gulf of Mexico but your friend said he did, it is still pointless as it is the kid's problem .

Now on topic : It does not matter really, he swam in the ocean with gulf of Mexico in it but not at the gulf of Mexico altogether, I think you are more on the correct side but we cannot tell as we (Vizzed, Didowe) dunno which ocean the kid swam in.

Actually, if you think about it, all oceans (water surrounding land) are connected (by the world map) so wherever you swim at a beach it is connected to another beach and the gulf of Mexico and stuff.

I am not sure as I don't study geography, I am thinking more of common sense .

I didn't angry over it at all I just wanted him to say I was right. I know I'm right because I checked the International Hydrographic Orginization's (they decide what bodies of waters are which and everything about the world's waters) site and the Gulf is included in the Atlantic Ocean. I just don't like it when people tell me I'm wrong even though I have proof.

I believe this is a gray area. It depends on your definition of oceans really. You both must have valid points...

Anyway the fact of the matter is, it is really dumb to argue over something like this. It's just... pointless. I see no point in it.
