Mega Man X4 was released in 1997 or 1998 in North America. The game was well received. Magma Dragoon also spelled Magma Dragon is a reploid, cyborgs with human traits such as the ability to make their own decisions, think logically, and even have DNA, that first appeared in Mega Man X4. He would later become a maverick, which are reploids that pose a danger, so lets learn about him.

It is not known who created Magma Dragoon. What is known that he had excellent battle and combat skills. He was a master of several martial arts. At some time he became a Maverick Hunter. He became a trusted member and was made a captain. He was put in charge of the 14th unit. His unit was a combat unit which suited Dragoon just fine. He was very effective at leading missions and finishing his missions. However, Dragoon was not all that he seemed.

Magma Dragoon was not a member of Repliforce. However, he would be the spark plug that started the Civil War. Repliforce was a military organization that was created to help keep the world peace. Early on they would assist the Maverick Hunters in hunting down criminals and suppressing Maverick activity. In fact, both organizations would send members to train with the other. All was going well.

Sigma though had returned and was hatching a plan to start a civil war between the two organizations. Sigma first appeared to the General stating the Maverick Hunters especially X and Zero could not be trusted and the General needed to rise up. The General was so outraged at such an event that he ordered Sigma out of his presence and also told him to never ever contact him again.

Sigma then contacted Magma Dragoon to attack the Sky Lagoon a floating resort above a major metro area. Now it is unknown if Dragoon was already infected with the Sigma Virus, or was he manipulated by Sigma. It is speculated he had intentions to join Sigma all alone and was just laying low. Regardless once Sigma gave him the order he followed it. Magma Dragoon took out the Sky Lagoon power and nuclear generator causing it to crash. He also led mavericks to cause mass destruction in the city below.

X and Zero counted Dragoon on the Sky Lagoon he told them they needed to escape that nothing could be done. X and Zero did not even suspect Dragoon was now a maverick. X and Zero encountered Repliforce who had showed up to assist. The Maverick Hunters wanted Repliforce to surrender and come in for questioning so they could get to the bottom. Repliforce refused and was judged as Mavericks. The General decided they would start a coupe to build their own nation of Repliods but the General stated humans were not to be harmed. The civil war was on which would destroy 90% of both armies.

X and Zero later learned that Dragoon had betrayed the Hunters. Dragoon knew that his former comrades would be hunting him down. He established a base in an active volcano. He waited for X and Zero to come. He was eager to fight to the death with his two comrades. Despite putting up a powerful fight he was defeated by X and Zero. As he died he told the two Hunters he was hired by a mystery figure and that his job was to cause the Sky Lagoon to fall which he stated he did. The former hero died as a disgrace and as an evil maverick.

Appearances- Dragoon is based off of the mythical legendary creature the Dragon. He has red and silver armor. He also has a green ring around his neck. He is also tall. He also has large wings on his back.

Personality- Dragoon before he betrayed the Maverick Hunters was adventure seeking. He was always ready for battle and eagle to join battles. He thought of himself as a very skill full officer. At first he was brave and every effective at what he did. He was so good as a Maverick Hunter he was being held as a hero. However, Dragoon had a dark evil side to him. Again, it is unknown if he was infected with the virus or if he had these intentions all along. He showed he had no respect for life as he did not care that his actions caused a mass casualty event. He also states he enjoys seeing those who he does not feel worthy suffer. He does respect strong reploids though. He wants nothing but war and destruction. Furthermore, he is manipulative as he was able to fool the Maverick Hunters into thinking another Maverick caused the Sky Lagoon when it was later learned he did it. He has a sinister laugh even as he is dying implying he might be insane. Regardless, he has no remorse for his actions. Basically, he went from a good guy to one of the most evil characters in the game next to Sigma.

Abilities- Dragoon is immune to fire and can generate fire attack weapons. In fact he fights a lot like Ryu and Sagat from Capcoms other popular games Street Fighter. Most likely his attacks resembling Sagat and Ryu was a street fighter reference. He can generate very high temperatures. He can even turn into a lava fireball. He knows every martial arts on the planet and is considered a master in them. Before he was a maverick he was also an effective leader. He is powerful and very fast in his attacks

Attacks- Dragoon has several powerful and quick attacks. One of his main attacks the Hadoken. Dragoon will throw a huge fireball at his opponents. Again this is similar to Ryu's Hadoken attack and Sagat's Tiger shot. His other powerful attack is his rising fire. Dragoon will turn into a fireball and try to uppercut his opponents sending them flying. This is similar to Tiger Uppercut or Ryu's fire uppercut. In addition, he can turn into a fireball and just dive at the player crashing into them. Moreover, he can cause the Lava to shoot up from the volcano causing lava to hit his opponent. Like a typical portrayal of dragoons he can also breathe fire in his fire breath attack. Another powerful attack is his charged up attacks. Thus, he has several powerful attacks that are quick and can be hard to dodge.

Weakness- X or Zero can bring the Ride Armor to this battle. The player can drain 40-50% of his health metter using the Ride Armor. X he is weak to Double Cyclone. The Cyclone will keep him from using some of his fire attacks as it puts out his fire. Zero has a harder time as Zero has to use the electric move to stun him. However, he is quick and powerful so he can recover quickly. One of his weaknesses is he can be over confident in battle. He believed he could defeat X and Zero in battle which was foolish. He does not believe due to his attacks that he can loose a battle. Ironically, that goes against the teachings of most martial arts.

If the player defeats him they will get rising fire. For X they will be able to shoot fire balls upward to burn or melt enemies as well as blocks. Zero will get the fire uppercut. Zero can do a fire uppercut with his saber.

In Summary Magma Dragoon attacks are likely a reference to Capcom's other popular game Street Fighter. His moves resemble Sagat, Ryu and to some extent Ken Masters. He is a powerful fighter. Dragoon started out as a hero as he was a high ranking officer. He lead in missions and was effective and was seen as a hero. However, he most likely had evil intentions all along. The way he mentions Sigma contacted him makes it likely he was a Sigma plant. It should be noted he is 1 out of 3 bosses from Mega Man X4 that is not a Repliforce Member. Cyber Peacock, and Split Mushroom are Sigma's Mavericks. Dragoon also has the Sigma symbol on him again suggesting he was a Sigma Plant. Therefore, that would explain why he showed no remorse for his actions and why he likes destruction even mass casualty events. He had no problem following Sigma's orders. Thus, he went from a heroic character to a character who died as a disgrace and evil being. This is different than some of the other Mega Man X4 characters who died an honorable death.
