Paper Mario 64 introduced new characters to the Mario franchise. Some of these new characters would go on to appear in later Mario games. The 7 elite star spirits are one of those characters. Kalmar is one of the 7 elite star spirits that first appeared in Paper Mario 64. Anyway, lets learn about him.


Not much is known about Kalmar origins, but like most stars he was probably born as a star kid. Therefore, it was likely he was chose to be an elite star spirit by Eldstar. Regardless he resides in Star Haven. Like the other elite star spirits he watches over the star rod. He also has the ability to grant wishes to those that have good character, good intentions, are noble, and worthy. He along with his colleagues do not grant wishes to those who have bad intentions, wish for fame and power, have bad character, and those that are just selfish in general.

One day Bowser frustrated that the star spirits were not granting his wishes due to reasons I mention decides to steal it for himself. Bowser and his army breach Star Haven. Bowser then steals the star rod to power himself up, and imprisons the star spirits. He gives Kalmer to one of his minions the Crystal King. The Crystal King keeps him in the coldest part of his castle.

Bowser then invades the Mushroom Kingdom, and kidnaps Peach. Mario tries to save the day but is no match for the newly enhanced Bowser. Bowser sends Mario flying out of the castle. Kalmar appears in Mario's vision. At first he says oh no he is injured we are doomed. When Mario recovers and heads to Star Haven a hologram of him appears. He along with the others star spirts use the last of their power to explain Mario the situation and how they can help him.

After Mario liberates him he gives Mario an ability. He is seen helping Mario defeat Bowser with his power fully restored. At the ending he returns to Star Haven with the star rod fully restored.

Appearance- He is a yellow star with big eyes. He has a brown mustache. He is usually calm but after the events it appears he is frowning.

Personality- His name is a pun on the word calm. Normally, he is a calm person and laid back. He does not like arguments, drama, and violence unless its needed. Basically, he likes to take it easy. On the other hand, he is shown to be gloomy and pessimistic at times. This is when he stated Mario was injured and that they were doomed. When he uses the last of his power. He states Bowser has the Star Rod and wonders if he can be stopped. Despite being kept in a very cold place he did not complain. It is speculated his name could also be a reference to the Swedish city of Kalmar. A city that is infamous for its cold temperatures and lots of ice and snow.

Abilities- After Mario defeats the Crystal King and liberates him he gives Mario a new ability in battle. Mario can use his ability up up and away. Mario can cause enemies to lift up and off the screen.

The other elite star spirits- He looks up to Eldstar and is close to his colleagues. Basically, like a sibling relationship.

Mario- He considers Mario the last hope to defeat Bowser. Although he is not optimistic. He knows that Mario is a good character and has good intentions. He is thankful for Mario helping restore his powers.

Mario Party Members- He is on good terms with the Mario party members because they help Mario.

Peach- He along with his colleagues consider Peach to be noble and good character.

Enemies

Bowser- Bowser was not liked by the Star Spirits before he did his despicable deed. Simply because he was seen as not having good character. After Bowser did his deed he was disliked even more.

Kammy Koopa-She helped Bowser breach the Star Haven he does not like her.

Crystal King- Even though he did not complain to much. He likely did not like the Crystal King because he imprisoned him in his dungeon.

In summary, Kalmer is normally a calm star spirit. He is laid back and tries to avoid conflict. But he does know that sometimes violence is needed. Basically he is peaceful and wants a drama free world. Maybe that is why he did not complain about being in the dungeon because it was quite. His name as I stated could be referenced to a city in Sweden known for ice and snow. However, he can be pessimistic as when he though him and the others were doomed when Mario was defeated.
