Launch Octopus, also known as Launcher Octopuld, Octo or Octo-torpedo, is a boss from the first Mega Man X game. As his name implies he is based off of an Octopus. He also has a sibling, more on that in just a bit. Anyway, lets learn about him.

Octopus was a reploid, robots that are like humans they have DNA and can make decisions for themselves, built by Cain Labs. He was created from the same DNA as Volt Kraken. This made Octopus and Kraken brothers. Both brothers were designed to protect the oceans from maverick activity. Kraken was also created to provide power to stations in cases of emergencies. Being Brothers Octopus and Kraken were very close.

Octopus due to his combat abilities was put in charge of the 6th Naval Unit of the Maverick Hunters. His Brother Volt Kraen was appointed as second in command by General Sigma, who was the top maverick hunter at that time. At first Octopus filled his role nicely sinking enemy ships. However, Octopus never really trusted humans, despite being created by them. Octopus had a strong independent streak in him. He wanted a nation for reploids only. He soon became tired of protecting the humans ships and their coastal cities. He eventually would start doing extra damage such as not caring what he fired upon during a mission.

When Sigma went maverick he took a lot of former hunters with him. Launch Octopus was one of his top recruits due to his aggressiveness and independent thinking. Sigma did not have much trouble manipulating the already violent prone Launch Octopus. In Sigma's Maverick Army he was in charge of Sigma's navy. Now as a maverick there was no rules and no law. Sigma ordered him to attack ships and cities. Octopus gladly accepted that mission. He would sink shipping ships and naval ships for his own amusement. He would also fire missiles and bombs at coastal cities.

When Octopus became a maverick he wanted his brother to come too. However, Volt Kraken refused and believed what Sigma was doing was evil. He refused to join his brother. Ironically in later games Kraken would become a maverick himself due to tragic circumstances. Kraken was put in charge of the Maverick Hunter Naval Unit. However, Kraken did not like this as it meant he could go against his brother. Kraken did not want to go against his brother despite opposing him. Despite being a Maverick Octopus refused to kill his brother. Eventually X and Zero, depending on the game, tracked Octopus to his under sea base.

X or Zero, again depending on the game, destroyed Octopus ending his reign of terror. Kraken was full of emotional turmoil. He understood that his brother had to be stopped as he was a maverick. But he felt a lot of quilt being his brother. He wondered if he could have reasoned with his brother and done more to prevent him from going Maverick. Kraken retired as a Hunter due to this incident. X and Zero felt bad for Kraken but were glad that Octopus was no longer a threat.

Personality Wise- Octopus is arrogant and aggressive. He only respects reploids that he thinks have decent combat skills. Due to some of his attacks he often thinks he cannot be defeated. He is aggressive as he is not afraid to cause extra damage even when he was a maverick hunter. When he becomes a maverick he wants to cause nothing but destruction. In addition, he is also violent as he believes war is needed if there is not a war going on it needs to be created. He is not afraid to fire several missiles or bombs at cities. He believes combat and destruction is a great art form. He also is shown to be a strong independent as he believes that reploids should have their own nation. This also makes him easy to manipulate by Sigma.

Attacks- Launch Octopus has a lot of fire power. His main attack is firing several homing missiles at once. These missiles home in on their target. Since he fires multiple ones this can do serious damage. His other main attack is firing bombs in the shape of piranhas these bombs work like cluster bombs when they hit their target. In addition, he can create a whirlwind with his tentacles. He can use this attack to drain his opponents energy and refill his own health that he has lost in battle. This may be why he thinks he cannot be beaten in combat. He is very mobile in water. He can function on land but is less mobile and slow. Thus, he rarely goes on land.

Weakness- He is weak to the rolling shield . The shield will cut his tentacles. This will not allow him to use his energy drain attack. However, he can still use his other attacks.
