There has been this funny trend recently of girls asking boys how often they think about the Roman Empire, and even if they say like twice a month, they think they are joking.

I find it really funny, because it is kinda hard not to think about them so often, due to how much influence they have left. I mean, what script are you reading right now? The ROMAN script. Due to how ubiquitous the Roman's influence is in nigh everything, I would say almost everyday I think about them in one way or another.

So for funsies, I want to ask you all the question too... How often do you think about the Roman Empire?

Like... once a year?

To be honest I don't get why this has become a meme. Maybe I'm the odd one out though, I don't know.

I usually only think about the Roman Empire whenever I think about Asterix. So maybe about once every 5 months, I guess?

Also yeah, I have no idea why this became a thing either. Anybody know the context, if any?

Swedish influencer Saskia Cort went viral in 2022 after telling her followers to ask their male partners the big question: How often do you think about the Roman Empire? The trend returned in August 2023, after history enthusiast Gaius Flavius, who is also based in Sweden, posted the same prompt in an Instagram reel. This popularized the meme to the point where it reached TikTok, where it exploded into the mainstream, with many of the videos accumulating millions of views.

So clearly it's actually in Sweden that there is so much fascination with the Roman Empire, or at least boyfriends who are happy to pretend interest in anything their girlfriends ask about. I see no reason to be particularly interested in them... though I suppose certain modern leaders do evoke Caligula.

Noyb42: Makes more sense in Europe, their influence is significantly higher there. I mean, they literally have Roman names like GAIUS FLAVIUS

I usually think about it four times a month. Five or six if in European competitions or in a league cup. For AS Roma and our emperor Jose Mourinho fighting like the gladiators they are.

Everytime Italy is mentioned, or anytime anything about Italy is mentioned. People don't actually travel to Italy, they travel to the Roman Empire.

Whenever I eat pizza, I wonder if Romans would actually impale us for the atrocities we do to their prized meal. Whenever I eat pasta, I wonder if Romans would have been happier mixing it with the sauces and recipes we know nowadays.

On a more serious note, the Roman Empire is more present than we think. Just yesterday, watching the Formula 1 race in Japan, Fernando Alonso said the phrase "You just threw me to the lions there" on the radio, so clearly he was thinking about the Roman Empire just then (and so did all of us when we heard him xD)

I'm confused because I thought about the Roman Empire yesterday, and how they were so ahead of their time. They had plumbing 2,000 Years ago, a lot of people nowadays still don't have any plumbing. That's just crazy to think.

Dauntez: Very true. I remember my mom told me that in Pakistan, they used to waste in some container and have their servant dump it somewhere else. Insane to think 2,000 years ago they had plumbing, yet places like India only got lots of toilets recently.

Once every few days. But I majored in Latin in high school so I'm kind of biased, probably not the right target audience for this survey.

Furret : you and me need to have a little talk about history from time to time. As a dropout who wanted to major in history (B.A) I’m intrigued about Latin and its impact on today’s vocabulary.

I think about it often enough, couple times a week maybe. For example, I see there's road work, and I think to myself "I wonder how often the romans had to do maintenance on their roads?"

Furret : Wait, in your high school you could MAJOR in something?

I'm not going to lie I think about it some especially how Rome fell. The main reason is I see similar things lining up with the Fall of Rome to the United States of America.

In the last few years Rome was very divided and corrupt. Several Roman Emperors were so corrupt they were basically taking revenue the empire was getting from taxes and putting it in their back pockets. The Emperors responses was more taxes.

Rome had become so divided that the Empire split into two empires the West and Eastern Roman Emperor. This may have delayed the fall of the Roman Empire but it also weakened it.

Also, Rome would what many historians claim was unnecessary military intervention or starting unnecessary military conflicts.

This might be controversial. But Rome let a lot of groups of people into their empire without vetting them. Eventually those groups would later sack Rome in 375, 410, and 456 AD. They formed their own raiding bands. Now what lead to them sacking Rome is up to debate. Some believe because the Roman Empire treated them bad they revolted and it was their way of getting even. Another theory is they had planned this all along. Regardless, Rome letting raiding parties into the Empire ended up being a disaster.

So what does this have to do with the USA.

The USA from the 1960's to Present has had a lot of corrupt Presidents. One President staged an Attack on ships to draw America into a ground war in a country. Another President ordered a break in of the other parties Head Quarters. Three US Presidents seemed to have made some shady deals. Just like the Roman Empire we have had some corrupt leaders.

The US has also gotten involved in conflicts we probably should not have gotten in such as Syria, Libya, and Yemen. WE also invaded two Countries Vietnam and Iraq with really no cause. Both wars were based on lies. As I stated Vietnam was started when the USA staged to the Gulf of Token to make it look like the ships were attacked. The other one was based on the lies Iraq was in on 9/11 and had nukes.

Finally, The US appears to be letting lots of people in without vetting. The board is a huge mess and has been for a while.

I don't think about it often but when I see the similarities between the Roman Empire and the USA its almost identical.

tornadocam : Very insightful post. I often think about how the next 100 years or so are going to go for the USA. Most people can’t imagine the USA not being a superpower. They have huge GPD, have a very powerful military, are in tons of security councils, and even their culture (movies, music, TV, etc) has international appeal. But… all empires have their decline. I think you are correct. The USA is likely on the verge of its decline, but it isn’t going to happen overnight. I think in 100 years of so, Brazil, China, and/or India might take over as the superpowers (the “BRICS” countries). It’s hard to predict, though, the next superpower could be the randomness country, like… Venezuela, there’s no way to know for sure.

This may be off topic here. I am a Christian. The Book of Revelation is very interesting and prophetic. It stated that Israel would become a country again which they did in 1948 plus we are seeing some of the things the book mention slowly unfold.

What I have found interesting is the USA is not mentioned in the Bible directly. Other countries that were not around when Revelation was written are referenced. I have always found that to be interesting.

It could be we fall just similar to the Roman Empire did. That could very well happen.

I agree with your post the next several decades are going to be critical for the USA.

tornadocam: I also find that interesting, as in my religion (Shia Islam) we have a prophecy that Jerusalem shall be liberated when the savior returns. We didn't really know what the meaning behind this was back then, but it seems very clear what the narrations were hinting at now.

And it ties in together with how the original Kingdom of Israel had fallen. If I remember right, an Israelite had told me that the reason it had fallen was that Hashem had commanded the Israelites to disperse throughout the Earth, but they had refused. Because of this, they had been attacked by the Babylonians and were thus wiped out. Now that the State of Israel exists again, we think that a similar punishment will soon befall them.

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
