Mega Man 2 is considered the game that put the Mega Man Franchise on the map. Even though, this game was the second in the series it really established Mega Man as a true video game icon. It should be no surprise that several hacks have been made of this game. Roll-Chan 2 is a hack of Mega Man 2. This time you get to play as Mega Man and Proto Man's sister Roll. I will be reviewing this game as well as comparing it to the original.

Story-8

The story is similar to the original game except it features roll. Basically the story is from the First Roll Game. Roll was modified into a fighting robot along with her brother Mega Man. Roll defeated Dr. Wily. Out for revenge Dr Wily created 8 new robot masters and sent them after Roll. In the meantime he also plants to use this 8 robot masters to conquer the world. Roll heads out to once again stop Dr. Wily.

The story is pretty much unchanged from the original game. The only difference is it is made to suit Roll since she is the protagonist in this game. The story is a staple in Mega Man games. Dr. Wily trying a new scheme for world domination. Thus, I give the story a solid 8.

Graphics and Controls-9

The graphics in this game are almost identical to the original game. A few stages have been changed. Also Roll maintains her sprites and colors of her NES days. Now what is difference is Roll's colors are different than Mega Man's even when equipped with special weapons. I really like how the maker/s of this game kept the original graphics and colors for the most part. Mega Man 2 was a huge upgrade over the first game. The colors go well and are amazing. This game does not change that. The only minor problem is sometimes I did notice a slight lag. Now this could be my emulator I was using or it could be part of the game.

The controls in the original game were a huge improvement over the first game. This hack is a huge improvement over Roll-Chan 1. The controls are similar to the original Mega Man 2. I did not find myself fighting with the controls at all. In the first Roll game I felt like I was fighting the controls some. Overall, I give the graphics and controls a solid 9.

Sound 9

The original game was known for its rocking tunes and quality sounds. This hack is no different. I love some of the tunes in this game. Wood Man and Bubble Man and Dr. Wily fortress tunes are my favorite. The game has good music that makes you just want to pause and listen. I also like how the maker/s kept the original sounds of enemy shots, rolls buster shot, and special weapons. The reason I keep this a 9 out of 10. Is Roll 3,4 and 5 have better music in my opinion, but that is the only thing.

Replay Value: 9

Okay, I have played this one multiple times. In fact, this one is more fun than the first Roll-Chan game. While I like playing the original Mega Man games. I also play hacks. This one feels like its offering something new as you get to play as Roll. Even though it is a hack it feels like a new game. Therefore, this one is fun to play. It is also a good game to introduce somebody to Mega Man games too.

Depth-7

First of all Mega Man games are known for their depth. If the game suffers it does not have as much depth as other Roll Games. You cannot revisit stages in this game. This means you will have to explore every stage at one go. It also means you will need to make sure you have special weapons. Still, there are power ups and items to collect. The stages are decent and the game is the correct length. That was left unchanged from the original game. I still give the depth a 7 out of 10.

Difficulty-7

Roll Chan 2 does have its difficult parts, but so did the original Mega Man 2. The difficulty for the most part is left unchanged. The main difficulty is enemy placement and bosses. Enemies just love to come at you in numbers. Also some of the bosses can be tough to defeat. A few of the stages like Quick Man's are nightmares to deal with.

However, the difficulty is doable. Its not like the first game were you had very bad enemy placement and had to fight the controls. The game does help you out by giving you energy tanks. Also the game seems to be generous in giving extra lives. The original game was also like that. Also special weapons can do short work of some of the bosses taking a few out in less than 4 hits.

Basically, chances are you will die some in this game. But its doable and once you learn the stages chances are you won't send the controller flying across the room in frustration or throwing it down.

Overall: 9

Roll Chan-2 is a good solid hack. As I stated even though it is a hack it feels like a new game. It offers something new getting to play through the game as Roll is a nice touch. I also like it how the maker/s did not really change much. Mega Man 2 was an awesome game that put the Mega Man franchise on the map. Thus, it is one of those games that if your going to do a hack of nothing really needs to be changed except the characters.

The graphics and sound are a huge improvement over the first Roll-Chan game, which was a hack of Mega Man one. The difficulty is a good type of difficulty. It challenges you and test your reflexes but its doable.

The issues I have with this hack are very minor. The few lags I noticed are slightly noticeable but are minor. I would have liked for the maker/s to have made the stages revistable. That would have added depth and offered something new compared to the original game.

Overall, this is a solid game. I rcommend this game to new players who are playing hacks for the first time. I also think this would be agood game to introduce somebody to Mega Man too. Mega Man 2 and Roll Chan 2 really set the standars for most Mega Man games including the Roll games. Therefore, I give this game a solid 9 out of 10.
