Mega Man came out in 1987 and it started the Mega Man franchise. Mega Man would become one of the most iconic video game characters in video game history. His games are so popular it should be no surprise several games as well as hacks have been made. Roll-Chan (using Mega Man 8 Roll Costume) is a hack of the original Mega Man game. This time though you get to play as roll Mega Man and Proto Man's sister. I will be reviewing this game and comparing it to the original.

Story-8

The Story is identical to the original Mega Man game. The only difference is it involves Roll. Dr. Light and Dr. Wily create a total of 9 robots to help mankind. Proto Man is designed to be a police type robot but he runs off. Mega Man and Roll are lab robots. The other robots designed are Ice Man, Fire Man, Elec Man, Cut Man, Bomb Man, and Guts Man. However, Dr. Wily takes the 6 robots to try to take over the world. He cannot capture Proto Man because he ran off. He leaves behind Mega Man and Roll because he believes they are useless to him. Lab robots Mega Man and Roll ask to be turned into fighting robots like Proto Man was to stop Dr. Wily. Thus, Mega Man and Roll are enhanced to stop Wily. Roll heads out to try to restore world peace. While Mega Man is on standby.

Okay, I think this story was good in the original Mega Man game, because it introduced the characters well. The original did a good job introducing us to Dr. Light, and Dr. Wily. If you have not played a Mega Man game before this game does a good job of introducing the main characters of this game. Thus, I give the story a solid 8.

Graphics and Controls-7

The original Mega Man game had some problems with controls and graphics. The original game was the very first one so it was no surprise it had its problems. In the original the game could become glitchy at times. The controls could also be difficult at times. In this game some of those issues have been fixed. A lot of the glitches were corrected in this hack. That was nice to see as it made playing the game better. The colors in this game are pretty decent. I like Roll's costume in this game. I also like it how her colors change when using special weapons. In fact, it is better than Mega Man in the original game. However, there was still some issues. Sometimes it seems like the colors in stages do not mesh well. Moreover, sometimes it seems like the colors are kind of dull.

The controls are much improved from the original game. It seems like Roll controls better. On the other hand, sometimes I still found myself fighting against the controls. Not as much as the original game, but it is still noticeable. Since the maker or makers improved things I give the graphics and controls a 7 out of 10.

Sound-7

The music is good in this game and in my opinion sounds better than the original game. Ice Man, Fire Man, and Elec Man sound better than they did in the original game. It made me want to pause the game and just listen. The sounds the weapons make are also nicely done.

However, the sound does suffer some. Why oh why could the makers of this game not remove those annoying platform sounds. In Guts's man stages the moving platorms still make that annoying sound like they did in the original game. In Ice Man's stage the floating platforms still have their annoying sounds. In the original game I just wanted to hit mute. In this game I still wanted to hit mute. Maybe the makers of the game could not fix that, but then they fixed some of the other issues. Thus, I think they should have been able to fix the annoying sounds.

Due to the music and enemy sounds I give the sound a 7. What lowers the score is those annoying sounds I just mentioned.

Addictive- 7

I actually enjoyed playing this game more than I did the original. This one is actually fun to go back and play. The original Mega Man game was not a horrible game it just had some issues. I think the maker/s fixing some of the issues is what makes me want to play this one a few times. Also getting a chance to play as roll is a nice touch, because it offers something new. However, I will be honest of the roll games this is the one I go back least. Other Roll hacks such as 2,3, 4, and 5 are so awesome to play. Those games are just special and hardly have any flaws. Therefore, I give the replay value a 7.

Depth-8

Mega Man games are known for their depth. This game is no exception. Like the original game this game will make you go back to the stages to get all the items. This game also introduced a staple to Mega Man games and that was secret rooms. While the game does not have as much depth as future Roll or Mega Man games. It was nice that the maker/s kept the original depth in this game. I give the depth a solid 8 out of 10.

Difficulty-9

The original Mega Man game was known as one of the more difficult Mega Man games. The original game was difficult due to the glitch graphics, not so good controls and enemy placement. So how does this hack compare? Well, Roll One is still a difficult game. The main difficulty is enemy placement. Enemies just love to gang up on you, knock you down as you climb a latter. Also some of the bosses are very durable and take a long time to kill. Some of the bosses are also tough to kill. These are good reasons for difficulty. This is a game that will challenge your skills and reflexes.

However, the game can be a little difficult for the wrong reasons. The controls can still ge an issue. At times in the game the controls can be stiff and change speeds at random. This can cause to fall into a pit, land on spikes, and get hit. Still, its a huge improvement over the original game.

I give the difficulty a 9 out of 10. The game is hard and difficult but it is doable. I found it easier than the original game due to a lot of issues being fixed. Also, you can get energy pellets to refill your health so that is also a plus. The controls can still add to the difficulty though and yes chances are you will get frustrated at times.

Overall-8

The original Mega Man game was not horrible but it did have issues. That is to be expected for a franchises very first game. However, this hack is better than the original game. I like it that the makers of the game fixed some of the issues that plagued the first game.

I also liked the chance of getting to play as Roll. Even though this game is a hack it felt like a new game. It offered something new and was actually fun playing.

Still, this game did have some issues. The colors could have been done better in some of the stages. I know the makers were trying to keep the original feel but considering how they fixed the other issues. I would have liked to have seen the colors upgraded. Also, the sounds could have been fixed more. There are times the annoying platforms make you just want to mute the game. The controls can also still be an issue.

In conclusion, I give the game an 8 out of 10 rating. It has something to offer and is an upgrade over the original game. I will say I would not recommend this game to somebody who is new to Mega Man type games. I would recommend you introduce somebody who is new to Mega Man games to Mega Man 2 or Roll-Chan 2. The reason being new gamers might get frustrated with this game. On the other hand, if your a novice Mega Man player than yes I would recommend this game. This concludes my review of Roll Chan 1.
